So I've spent the past couple of weekends, cutting down trees on my property both inside my fence line and in the adjacent woods to my fenced back yard.
Friday night, I was attempting to get a rope around the upper half of a the last tree inside my fence that needed to come down. I decided the best way to get the rope up there was to tie a 1 1/8" impact socket to the end of the rope so I had some weight on it to throw it up into the tree. I was attempting to get the rope high enough on the tree, so when we cut it down, I could guide it to fall where I wanted it to fall. I have done this so many times over the course of the last couple of weeks, it seemed like a no brainer (no pun intended...read on.... ).
So, I took like 4 throws to get the rope up in the upper half of the tree and it got hung up and wouldn't come down. So, my bright a$$ decided the easiest way to get the rope unstuck was to start tugging on the rope. I was pulling on the rope with all 180lbs of me as hard as I could when all of a sudden, it came loose and the 14oz socket came back at me so fast, I never saw it coming. Cracked me on the top of the head and I dropped to the ground like a dead tree. Holding my head and half unconcious(sp?), blood pouring out everywhere, I tried to stand up. I instantly fell back down.
Needless to say, the wife and my father drove me to the ER Friday night and I now have 6 staples in my skull and a very bad headache. The ER doctor told me I was lucky, another 4 inches down toward my temple and I'd be dead.
With the fear of a concussion gone, I am now eating percocet 10-650's like candy trying to get the headache to go away. This Friday, I have to go and have the staples removed and yes... for those of you wondering.... I am going to get that damn tree down this weekend. I will not be beaten.
Just wish we videotaped it and sent it in to Country Fried Home Video's on Spike.... I'm sure I could've won some money.
Go with PI heads and quit watching The Fast and the Furious. (thanks 2 IhaveadopeGT)
Remember, it is almost impossible for anyone, myself included, to diagnose a problem over the internet without seeing the car. My advice is simply that, advice based on years of experience. I don't want you or anyone taking my word as gospel. I am trying to give some direction as to what I think may be happening.
Geeze dude that blows. I couldn't tell you how many times I've cracked myself in the ribs or shoulder in that exact same scenario. I've never got hit in the head though. Hope the headache goes away soon.

I was just doing the exact same thing. I have a rope saw with about 75ft of rope on either side of the 48" chain and a heavy sandbag on the weighted end. That thing works like a charm but i know what you mean about it whipping around so fast you never see it coming.
Man, I'm glad you are not too badly hurt. I did a similar NO-NO myself years ago when I was clearing some of our land. I don't know if you know what a honey locust tree is but it's a tree from hell. It's spindly looking with snakey branchs and great clumps of 4" thorns all over. Since I couldn't get in to cut it down I decided to pull it down with my chain and tractor. I threw the chain around the tree, hooked up my John Deere and here we go. The only problem was my chain was only 20' long and the tree was 25' high so you know where the last 5' of the tree landed. Right on top of me and my open cap, no top tractor. Well I spend the next few hours getting thorns removed in the E-room and telling myself how stupid I was but I lived through it and guess what? I never did that again.
Sorry about your agony. Good thing you didn't use a brick.
On a serious note, you would be crazy to mess with that tree right after they removed those staples.

Sounds like a great bar story in the making, now you have to finish the tale with. . . So round 2 I hooked my truck up to the B***ard, floored it, tore up half my backyard, but that sore Sum Beach is now keeping me warm on the cold winter nights.
lol in all serious though good luck with the recovery.
