Just starting this post because i know alot of people have alot of questions about transmissions from why its makes a whining sound, why it flys out of gear....and so on...so if any one has any questions im more than willing to offer my advice or send you in the direction of some one who can...or if you just have good basic info you would like to put on here...Ive been working in a standard trani shop for over 4 years now we have gears on the shelf from the 1930's to present...

I work in a standard trany shop so my knowledge about auto's is limited to none but im sure some one on here will be about to help you or you may want to go to your local ford garage and talk to one of the mechanics...personally it sounds like you have an oil pressure problem inside the trans because im pretty sure that automatics run on oil pressure at the bottom of the case...but i can't tell you anything for sure about that...a trany flush may take care of your problems or it could be something else, trany itself, torq converter, electrical, etc. i dunno...id check a ford garage..

Start by checking the fluid, make sure its at the right level, pink in color, and doesn't smell burnt. How many miles on it? It sounds like a problem with the fluid, but it could be a number of things. Start by checking the fluid or getting a fluid/filter change, it may help, if not the tranny will need some work like a new converter, accumulator, or a valve body problem.

I've got a really big problem and if you could get back to me ASAP that would be great.

Long story short: Just bought a 98 Cobra with 125K on it, 3 weeks in the cluster gear for 5th snapped so its in the shop right now. We asked the guy to take a look at any other parts that need to be replaced so that we can get it all taken care of while its open. He tells us that it would be wise to replace the following along with the gear:

Input shaft gear
bearings with synchro rings
the clutch (which he says has about 30-40%) left
and a new engine seal

price for everything including labor at $2542.75 and without the new clutch $2149

we have $750 being covered by our warranty

I've got a few choices here, get everything replaced and pay the $2,500

or just get the cluster gear replaced and then sell the car. I'm worried that 3 weeks in to owning the car this can't be a good sign of things to come...

Do I have any alternatives? Would it be cheaper to just replace the whole tranny with a high performance one?

I could really use some good advice.

Thank you!

I forgot to mention the parts will be after market as dealer parts will be thousands more
