Imagine you took an alien, and showed him a '65 Mustang, and told him that it was a Mustang. If you then took him someplace where there was a Mustang II parked with Stangs from every year from '79 till '04, and told him to pick the Mustang out of the lineup, he'd pick the II.
How true

You've also got to realize, he'd have no idea what was different under the cars, what powered them, etc. He'd have no prejudices.
Odds are, his second choice would be the 1994 or 1995.

uh uh...mine is a real one...it does that weird thing that mustangs do...it goes fast and looks hot doin it...welllll...almost all mustangs anyways...some mustangs dont do either...you know the type
time for a lil brutal honesty-1974 to 1978 offered nothing o value really...for mustangs anyway...every other stang was cool...hell was there even a v8 model stang in 1974? its the years of shame for mustangs...and those who pick a mustang II over any other stang are delusional ...to me anyway...i aint god...thats just one mans opinion
ps what? you offering a choice of mustangs...2005 at 300hp or 1974 at 105...gosh sir...i'd like the 1974 of course

Last time I checked, there was a website called (my emphasis) "ALLfordmustangs.com" and lo and behold, there's a forum there for the Mustang II. Some people have this need to get in their little digs against them, but the FACTS always get in their way.
And you might want to think about something, here. Yes, you probably do love your Mustang, but those of us who love the Mustang II do so in spite of the fact that there are people like you who seem to think burying your head in the sand will make us disappear. I think most Mustang II fans are at LEAST as dedicated to their Mustangs as those who love any other era of these cars, if not even more, simply because we so often have to deal with the small (and shrinking) group who seem to be trying to compensate for something by slamming our cars.
You might as well get over it...

okay try to analyze this statement...my mustang is a real mustang...your mustang is a crappy lil pansy one...think about that...it really isnt worth pickin apart but it really says that mine is cool and yours isnt....so no my foot isnt in my mouth... anyway...why are you getting so upset? it isnt like i'm talkin about you...youre probably a cool guy...you just drive a piece of crap car...but i know some drop dead hotties that wear hand me downs...whatcha got shouldnt make you or break you,,,i just think the mustang II is easy to rag on cause its a total piece of poo...in my opinion...nothing major....i wont even say thats a fact(but it is)...lighten up...i didnt make you buy it
And in MY opinion (which holds at least as much validity as yours), you bought an over-engineered wannabe rice mobile, but I've refrained from saying so, DESPITE your repeated uncalled-for slams on my choice of Mustang. Your last post is a PERFECT example... And why is it that some people just HAVE to start spewing venom any time the Mustang II is mentioned? You may not like them, and that's okay, but if all you want to do is clutter up a thread with useless and inflammatory snide comments, what's the point?
Normally, I don't usually bother responding to bigotted and ignorant posts like what I've seen here, but with the rain we've been getting here in BC I happen to be a bit less busy with my cars, and its a fairly easy way to build up my post count here.
Hell, I often refer to my II's as "Pinto's on 'roids" myself, and I've found our bantering to be somewhat entertaining.

And on a semi-related note: How many Mustangs are worth MORE than their original purchase price before they are eligible for vintage plates? Its not uncommon with an original or restored Mustang II to bring as much as DOUBLE the original MSRP (and some have fetched in the ballpark of TRIPLE!). Yes, many of the early Mustangs fit the profile, but will the S197? Will most of the Fox-chassis? Probably not as a general rule.

without the mustang II, there would be no mustang. lee iacocca knew that the american people did not want a performance vehicle. they wanted fuel economy and decent looks, as well as reliability. they got it(as much as reliability as the 70's had to offer from the us.)
the first mustangs weren't a performance vehicle either. they were originally a sporty vehicle designed to appeal to the young kids. it did so very well.
stop the hate. you guys are being car-cist. liek the previous guy said, this is ALLfordmustangs.com
all the II did was keep the mustang name alive. be grateful. the II does deserve some respect.

Even as a Mustang II fanatic, I don't follow the "it saved the name" theory, actually.
While it DID keep the name from dropping out for the mid-70's, Ford could have dropped the Mustang and revived it later. I, for one, am glad they didn't.
I don't even care if people respect my Mustangs. I'd be content if they'd simply stop bashing the II at every possible opportunity, especially when its rather obvious that MOST of the slams come from those who know next to nothing about the FACTS regarding these cars. The II was a compromise (like most previous generations) that fit the needs of the time. If even HALF of the crap people spew about them was actually true, there not only wouldn't be any of them left, but there'd be a LOT fewer decent handling hotrods and kitcars to choose from.
The rest of the post I agree with whole-heartedly

it kept the pony alive, i got no problem with them, a stang is a stang, better than a probe.
I like the II, it's a Mustang in my book.
The Probe...
We had one the first year it came out (step mom's, two step moms ago). LX model, with every option possible.
That car was cool as shizzle. It rode nice, drove well, was comfortable, reasonably fast too.
Was all digital inside, like Knight Rider.
I liked it. Alot.
