I have one of those propane BBQs that's like an outdoor Jenn-Air stove. During the summer I use it more than the stove in the house so I got a big one. When I want that good smoke flavor I just throw a tin of wood chips on the corner of the grill and viola, smoked meat without hassle.

Hmmmmm... Hey Judi! I don't know how I missed this thread!
Mr. Ugly is spot on.
Two people or not, the 18 1/2" is just too small. Minimum you want (has to be a Weber) is the 22 1/2".
Unless you have any specific question I don't really want to just reiterate what everyone else has said. There is an art to charcoal/ wood grilling (or bbq'ing or smoking depending on what you're actually doing) and it is an art that you'll continuously get better at.
Shaping fire through air control will really make you feel good when you eat your efforts. Gas is fine but it's boring in my opinion.
We have three 22 1/2", one 26", a big vertical smoker and a big chunk of dough being saved for a Klose tow behind smoker.
If you get to the point of doing ribs or pork shoulder or something where you technically want to "smoke" the food just remember to set your top vent for a nice chimney and then only adjust the air flow with the bottom vent. This is a good tip for any smoking to maintain a uniform chimney. Grab a good smoker thermometer and stick it through one of the vents to monitor temps.
Just have fun and grill all that you can ALL YEAR LONG!

I use them both, and I'll say the charcoal gives the best flavor. Gas is cleaner. Both work for me, for doing both grilling and smoking (I prefer the hickory chips). I have a gas Char-Broil and it's fed me since at least 2000.
This reminds me, I haven't done any ribs yet this year...

Gas is fine for burgers and hot dogs, but if you're doing BBQ, ribs and especially steaks, use charcoal.
I had a Webber 18 1/2 for years at the Va Beach house and it worked fine for up to 3 people. Anymore than that and I had to precook stuff inside and finish them up on the grill.

Hey all!! Thank you so much for posting tip and ideas!! I have had to put this on hold because my husband and I are a physical mess at the moment... I tore my meniscus working out and his sciatic nerve is absolutely killing him.... I can't wait to be able to get a grill and start firing it up!!!

MMMMMMMMribs.. I smoked some last weekend. (yes, in the smoker)
Sorry to hear about the physical pains, I had to have back surgery to fix my sciatic due to a ruptured disc (no, it wasn't a floppy disk). No horror story here, it was a 100% success.
