hello, i was wondering about how many of you do your own work on your cars. and i dont mean changing fliuds, but doing rear ends and engine work. ive done all the work on my car myself. just curious.

I have never taken any of my cars to a shop (ok, I lie. . . I had to bring a car in ONCE just to have the codes read friggin $75). My father taught me how to do everything as I was growing up, He comes over when I have something I need help with though Sometimes I ask him to come over even if I don't need help because I know it makes him feel good lol
I have done all of my modifications in my own garage with the help of my father. We have done mild bolt-ons, like CAI and changing my transmission valve body to a J-mod valve body, and also some harder stuff like my 3.73 gears. Just today i finished up my cam project. We tore the engine apart ourselves, even ported and polished the heads and intakes. I like doing stuff in my own garage that way i can make sure the job is done to my standards. It's also nice to brag about doin it all myself

I have never taken my car to a shop, i do all the work myself because i dont trust the people who would work on my car where im from(A.) because the are known for cooking tires on customers cars (B.) they do half a$$ work and over charge (C.) i would rather have the satisfaction of saying i did all the work myself, plus im learning so that if something does go wrong i can fix it.
but that just me and their is nothing wrong with taking it to a shop as long as you trust the people who are doing the work but yet again thats just me.
I have started doing all the work myself. Back in March I rebuilt my engine's head, and about 3 weeks ago, I rebuilt the ENTIRE engine block assembly (crank, pistons, cam). The only time it goes to a shop is for inspection.
On my Mustang, I did rear end, the whole suspension, driveshaft, headers, FRPP exhaust, blower, brakes, emissions components...
The only thing I didn't do myself was tranny replacement and window tints.
On my 73 V6 Capri, I did brakes, suspension, steering, headers, exhaust, electronic ignition conversion, intake manifold, carburetor and mods, milled the heads myself, cc'd the chambers, port matched the intake, swirl polished the valves, installed double valve springs, replaced cam and lifters.
i love bragging about doing everything myself. i also own a 76 scout terra pickup that me and my dad built. we went to the junkyard and found a 440 block (yeah yeah its a mopar), built it from the ground up. its got lockers, lifts, winches, nice paint, basically one hell of an offroader that you dont want to use cuz its so pretty, and i can say I built that. its just satisfying.

The Mustang goes to the dealer since I have the extended warranty, i let them service it as well. Good dealer that i trust and i usually wait while they do the work. My 73 MGB I've totally rebuilt everything on that car at least 3 times, did everything but paint. As far as bolt on mods go on the stang i do those. Guess I've reached the age when crawling around on a cold concrete floor has lost some appeal. Glad to know that I've got the skills to do my own repairs on alot of things, but as far as the computers and alot of safety equipment on new cars I'm at a loss.
well in the next few weeks ima start looking at doing some bolt ons for my stang...i have never done any car stuff in my life..im first generation car fanatic in my family so no help there...none of my friends are into cars so im screwed there and i live in an apartment so don't have good room but they said i could work on my car as long as i am tidy. So basically i will try and be a do it yourself but i will be on my own and need to go out and get tools as well as parts as i go...im trying to do a v6 to svt upgrade so we know that will be fun and full of receipts..im a pc wiz so feel confident in taking things apart and putting them back together and like to get dirty...ps obama sucks *randomness*
I do minor engine work, but I have like no tools, so its harder for me. Ill take the car to my fathers sometimes, and sometimes father or brother help....

We do everything ourselves at our shop including performance builds. Our next 4.2 motor is going to Norway, so I guess we are now International. My Son might go over there to complete the install.....
I've been trying to do more of my own work, just so I can learn more about how to do these things. I recently did my first brake job on my truck with the help of my brother, however I left doing the ball joints to the pros simply because I don't have the tools to do that sort of thing. I've done all the small mods to my Mustang including the valve cover swap.

OK, so I've added a few things to it. Check my Profile - too many to list here.
