My hip joints were diagnosed with AVASCULAR NERCROSIS from Last years MRI to this Years. My Left hip is 80% bone loss in the Femoral Head/ball and 10% in the right one.
The transistion of walking on my own two feet into the Cheyenne VA Hospital last Friday and leaving in a wheelchair, was mentally and emotionally tough.
Dr. orders are No weight bearing on the joints due to risk of fracture/destruction.
My options now are:
Surgery in Late October:
1st attempt will be the decompression where they drill into the femoral head at an angle.
8-12 months to see if the bone will/has regrown. During such time, will need to be off it as much/often as possible.
If surgery is not effective, I will need to have a complete hip replacement(s). This my require the next 6-24 months in my new wheels.
The suspected cause: Corticosteroids. It isn't clear how these anti-inflammatory medications, such as prednisone, cause avascular necrosis. People who take high doses of corticosteroids for long periods of time — for instance, people with chronic illnesses such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus — are more likely to experience avascular necrosis. Avascular necrosis is rare in people who take lower doses of corticosteroids for a short time. Corticosteroid injections — for instance, into an inflamed or arthritic joint — don't cause avascular necrosis.
Various Inhaled Corticosteriods and repeatitive use of Prednisone since 2002, for my lungs (ASTHMA-COPD) - Gulf War Related. My VA Disabled Rating is 60%.
Running the race one step at a time in Grace with Love,
Congratulations, Fred!
You have been through so much and we very much appreciate you educating our Men (and Women) here on the importance of early detection and care.
Sending positive vibes and prayers your way... the Hip thing goes smoothly and you are on your way...
Congrads! My dad just had the radical prostrate surgery in July and is cancer free as well.

Well, if you start to get down just think of what you've been through and where you are now... alive and with a sense of humor!
You've proven that your body is tough enough... the rest will fall into place. There is no timetable for what you're going through so don't set unreal expectations for where you should be at a certain point in time.
Continue to lean on us. We all aren't going through what you're going through but we've all had issues and medical conditions in our lives and just knowing that let's you know that you're not alone.
Stangers unite!

That is terrific news that you were able to overcome cancer!
Looks like you have got a good game plan in place to recover from the other issue. Just take everything one day at a time and if all work's out well you'll be up and about soon.
