Default 1989 Ranger Clutch please help

So the neighbor kids clutch goes out and him and his three friends ask for a hand, well i figure no big deal right?.. WRONG. heres where we are at and whats wrong.
Pulled everything but the trany's hydralic cable line wont com off of because the plastic clip piece is broken. Well i slide the trany to the side and explain to them how everything goes back together, i leave for a bit and i come back with everything in its place so i take a look and it all looks good the alignment tool moves along freely and i figure id help them muscle the trany into place. after we get that in we get it all bolted up, and i leave for dinner. figured they can get the driveshaft in no problem.

Well now one of them is telling me that they have it all together and its stuck into gear and making a ticking noise so i head over there and check it out. Sure enough she is stuck into gear and it is making a tick/small knocking noise coming from the tranny/clutch area, but the clutch opperates real smooth.

It's dark and im wondering what i am going to have to look at tomorrow. any ideas?

Other things are the transmision was covered where the shifter goes in and was left in 2nd gear but now feels as its in nueteral but wont slide into any gear.

Also im thinking the ticking noise might be from what i think is the tach cable "square shaped cable coming out of the back of the tranny that i took out cuz they forgot to disconnect it, could the tick be from this being put back in incorrectly?

any help/ideas would be great.
