While at the book store I picked up a Magazine called Pontiac Enthusiast because on the cover was the caption that the GTO beats the Mach I so I read the article and this was funny.
They had went through some trouble to get the two cars for the test which was supposed to be a Stock vs. Stock competition. Well they got the two car’s and all the automatic GTO could best was a 14.79 at 94mph. So the author of the article said that “something” was wrong with the GTO that had been delivered to them……….(my guess is that the problem with the GTO was that it says Pontiac on the side……

)
So for the Stock vs. Stock shoot out they called in performance specialist who tweaked the car…..dyno tuned to be exact, and they change a resistor that made the car think it was 56 degrees instead of 95 degrees, iced down the MAF and intake and lowered the tire pressure. The admitted that only think they did to the Mach I was check the oil.
Well after all the dyno sessions and tweaking they announced that the GTO had spanked the Mach I. Wow imagine that!
It had a best time of 14.05 at 98mph. The best the (Stock) Mach I could do was 14.15. They did admit they have heard stories of the Mach I dropping into the high 13’s but made some comment about the “awkwardness” of the shifter and said if they had had more time to practice……
They also tested the cars on a 800 foot slalom course in which the GTO also beat the Mach I. Of course they did not say if they ran that course before or after the dyno tune…………..
Another example of quality reporting…………….
