Default I need a power adder!!!!! Almost beat by VW Golf...

Almost got beat by a Turbo Golf the other night. Came off Rt 291 in Manchester CT the other night around 10:30pm...could have taken the highway all the way home, but that's boring and figured there would be more excitement cutting through town...definitely correct! Came to the bottom of the off ramp and sure enough a VW Golf pulls up next to me. I had a funny feeling he would want to race (had the rims, lowered etc...) plus this spot is perfect for it...double lanes and hardly ever any traffic, especially at night. So we both take a left and I'm not moving fast at all...wanted to see what he had in mind...sure enough he stayed next to me. We went over the train tracks and did the 3 horn start. I matted it in 2nd gear and jumped a nose in front of him, but I would need to shift and then he would get a nose on me...I could hear his turbo the whole time too. Anyway...we were basically neck and neck the entire time up to about 80 and then let off. Came to the light, crossed the main strip and then went at it again...same outcome, then he dropped behind and we went on our way.
I don't make it a habit of racing on the street (only the 2nd time I have done this), but there was nobody around at all...including the cops, thank god! It was a very respectful run...nothing stupid.

So I think this winter I need to do some type of power adder or heads, cam and intake...something to give me the edge over something like that Golf. I know I don't have a powerhouse and I don't act like it, but I need to have an edge over something like that.

91 GT, headers, bassani o/r x pipe, flowmaster, 373 gears, chip, underdrive pullies, cold air w/ k&n...the basic bolt on mods. Here's a pic

You could add a supercharger or go naturally aspirated with a set of heads and intake. You get at least 40hp from better heads and intake alone (considering cheap iron heads such as GT40, GT40"P"s, Dart Irons and a Typhoon or Cobra intake.).
Or step up to nicer alum heads such as TFS, Edel or better yet a set of AFR heads with matching intake.

it's actually not that bad a thing to be beat by a golf, not when you've actually seen what can be done with those things. I won't give away trade secrets, the guys will kill me, but don't feel bad.

My brother is a huge VW guy and when I mentioned the race to him he expected me to say that I got smoked...was surprised when I said it was dead even...he figures it was a 1.8Turbo with a chip. He has a 4 dr golf that he put a slightly worked VR6 in...that little car rips. That's his "project car", now he bought a Twin Turbo Audi...that thing has some serious torque...pins you to the seat when he steps on it...wish I still lived at home and made 40k a year! (he's only 21, so I guess it's ok that he still lives with mom and dad).

You would think (maybe it's more like 35k), but he's just enjoying the simple life...never had a serious girlfriend and is buying all the toys. He has a Buell (motorcycle), An Audi and the VW Golf project car that I mentioned before plus every piece of electronic equipment you would want. He doesn't see the need to move out right now unless a serious girl comes along. Power to him if he can still stand to be there. Our parents are really cool though...my dad's into the cars and rides a Harley, they're not pushing him to move. Me...I moved out at 18 with a biatch I now call my ex and then wished I had stayed home a bit longer. He's probably one of those people that will just buy a house when he is ready to move. Oh well.

yeah, those turbo VW's aren't slow by any means. If you see a GTI with an R32 badge on it, watch your butt, those things are mighty quick.

Don't worry about it too much man. I've seen some scary little Golf's. Theres no shame in losing to something of less-than-vette status as long as you carry it well.

Not that there's anything wrong with calling paxton...

I am happy to say that the race was dead even and I didn't flat out lose (probably would have kept my mouth shut if that had been the case LOL ), but I am definitely going to call someone over the winter to rememdy the situation.

How is that possible?
a VW Golf?
Am I missing something?
How much Torque could a Golf have?

I mean Jeeez.......they look like "grocery-getters"

I'm proud of you man, that took a lot of guts to admit that.

I'm feeling pretty good this morning......last night a ricer in a honda civic with a ridiculously huge FartMaster Muffler sticking out and up, noticed me coming up behind him. He floored it! What a WUSS! He didn't even wait for me to catch up with him! ....I had to go for it. I slammed it, caught him in about 2 seconds and left him. He was actually pissed! His stupid little face got all contorted and everything when I slowed back down so I could gloat. I laughed and pointed at him in real Irky fashion and turned right.
I'll never grow up!

Vw Golf Turbos are quick little things.....they dont have to tug around nearly as much weight as we do, give them some credit. very fun to drive :thumbup .....dont feel "ashamed" that you almost got beat by one either. Theyre meant to be quick. hense the TURBO befor the golf.

My brother is a big VW person. I talked with him about it and he thinks he might know the kid I ran...said if so then the car is a 1.8 Turbo, w/ intake, chip and an exhaust. He showed me this dyno sheet from a similar car... almost 200hp and 250lbs of torque. Plus the car weighs a couple hundred lbs less. Here is the dyno sheet my brother sent me of an almost identical car...
