Thinking about buying a USED gear set...what should I look for?
I found someone selling a set of used FRPP (supposedly) 3.73 gears for a VERY low price. The seller claims that he swapped to a completely different rear end shortly after buying them and they have very low miles on them. I have no idea how to tell a good gear set from a bad one...can anyone here tell me what to look for? Theres no obvious damage to them as far as I can see (broken teeth, etc). Is there any way to even determine if they are high-mileage or abused...or pulled out of a wrecked Expedition for that matter? Is there a difference between the gears the put in an Expy and the FRPP gears??
Also, is there a way to determine if these are really "Ford" gears by looking at them
(serial #'s, etc)?
I'm not trying to be cheap for the sake of being cheap, its just that I REALLY want to supercharge my car...and the more money I save on other purchases, the faster I can get it!! On the other hand, I dont want to fill my brand new car with a bunch of parts that will take a $hit on me after six months!!
I would not put used gears in my car. They really arn't that expensive to buy. The real cost is installation not the gears themselves. Get a set of Ford Racing gears from Summit and a new bearing install kit. I have Motive in my car and they are awesome. Best modification ever. Good luck mate.

I wouldnt get a set of used gears either . after they are installed one time , they develop a wear pattern that is specific to the way they were set up . putting them into a different rear end will cause the wear to then be uneven and could cause the gear life to be shortened . I wouldnt do it .

I have bought used gears before and as long as they are installed properly there shouldn't be a problem. I would look at the wear pattern on the gears. Just make sure the patern is even across the tooth of the gears. My used set was bought, installed, removed and sold. They were still like new.

YOU HAVE MOTIVE?? I posted a thread a while back asking if anyone used these...I had found a SMOKIN deal on a brand new set, but I was apprehensive to purchase them because I've heard that, depending on the manufacturer, you can get considerable "gear whine"...do you find that your rear end is louder? (oh man that sounds bad...lol)

My Motive Gears are very quiet. There is no gear whine at all. I was a bit worried becasue people have said they are noisy, but not in my case.

I need to buy gears too, but I'm just not comfortable buying used stuff for my car. Never have been, never will be. Like Oz said, the real cost is in the labor to install them.
