Right now i have $3,500 written out to me from my grandmothers passing away. Its blood money which sucks but none the less i have to find a use for it. So i start off by going to roseville automall to get a parts catalog to see how much those 302 svo siamese bore bare blocks are running for. So i get there, pass over a sold black gt40 with silver racing stripes, a panoz esperante, a roush focus and my favorite a 2000 cobra R. Grab my book and shoot home. Well my dad wants me to save the money, all of it! which i understand is smart but ive never been able to afford a great purchase like this. I make 7.10 an hour and still owe him about 5k in loans for my beater car. He doesnt want me to spend it, he doesnt want me to use it to pay off the loan. What to do?! I know building motors is expensive but i'd love to get the block as a good starting point. Since they are under 2k it would give me a little over 1,500 to put in savings, and by the way i have alot of savings for a twenty one year old. Ive put away a couple grand on my own making min. wage but once its in the bake he wont ever let me touch it. Who has ideas? Is he right? Geez he still has control over all my spending

you are 21 but still let your dad control your spending? im 18 and i do what i want with my money, because my dad knows im smart with it. I have 10k in savings just from working, noone told me to put it there, i just did it. and i still have enough to go have fun when i want. I say do what you want with your money, but if it was me, i always put unexpected cash into savings because i know i can do without it, which is why it was unexpected in the first place.

Tostaroller here are a few question to think about.
What do you do for a living?
Are you planning to go to Collage?
You have a Stang and a beater……looking good here!
Do you live with your parents are on your own?
Depending on the situation it all depends on what you should do it all depends on priority.

Well for my situation i am in college. About half way to having my degree, 2 years left but only 9 easy units a term. I may not have to finish college though as im meeting up on the 16th with a guy who may be able to get me a really good job/career position at his bank. He is the head morgage guy there, makes a ton of money and after meeting me wants to get me in his department, we will see how it goes and if i like it If i do i'll stay there, and the pay is great!. For now i live at home, have no plans of moving out for at least a couple more years. All of my bills are payed. I do have alot of money in savings that i could use to buy this but once the money is in there i consider it gone. Ive never had the cash to get something this good. I am talking it over with my mom, i'd like to hold one thousand of savings, save up the other thousand on my own to buy the block and put the rest 2,500- in savings
Results are in!!!! All money goes into a 1 year cd to collect intrest
In one year take one grand out, putting the rest back in a 25 year cd after having saved up the other 1k for this year!

You will be very sorry if you did not finish school and earn a degree. If the 'banker' friend does not encourage you to stay in school, he's only out to hire an underling that he has total control over. That job will be short lived IMHO.
Now, if you are living at home and your parents are paying your way when it comes to room and board, and I'm sure they fund a portion of your education, they indeed have control over your inheritance.
However, the money you earn at a job should be yours IMHO.
Sit down with them and talk. Explain how you feel and try a strike a deal.
I'm with Tom, there's no sense in going this far towards a degree and not finishing it. I'm sure there's a way you can work and go to school at the same time. As for the cash, I'd set aside at least 2 grand of it in a money market of good mutual fund and do whatever you want with the rest.

yeah, RedFire, I made some friggin' dumb-ass decisions in my 20's. Boy, I'm lucky to be here now....
Not only did I lose the shirt...I lost my pants too......it wasn't pretty!
Sometimes we "WANT" "THINGS" so bad, we'll make up any excuse to get it.......all this $$$h i t is material....................
It can't make you happy like a well rounded education can.
Did you know Psychiatric studies show conclusively that the excitement from buying a new car or even having the car of your dreams provided to you for free wears off in approximately 14 days?
God, if I knew "then" what I know "now" I'd be a VERY RICH man today..............

I'd save at least half of it. It's always good to have that extra cushion there in case something comes up. I'm kinda with your dad, it's better to save and have money when things go wrong, versus living paycheck to paycheck.... ok that was kinda scary.... sorry.... my bro just put the phone up to my ear with one of his friends on it but Yeah, I'd save it, at least half of it, if you're really itching to spend some (sounds like you are )
