What are the odds of a Carfax report being wrong? I recently bought a 1992 LX 5.0 convertable from a friend/dealer with what I thought were 52,000 miles on it. Ive had a few minor issues such as grinding/squeking near the rear wheels, coolant leaking from the bottom of the radiator and just tonight it refused to start. As far as the grinding he told me the day I bought it they would do that because he replaced the rotors and pads and it would go away in a day or two. Well it still does that a week after I have had the car. He said the coolant leaked out, more like dripped out excessively, because when he filled it that he over filled it. Well this leaking incident happened 2 days after he filled the coolant. Tonight was a whole other story. I was about to leave to enjoy a drive on a nice upstate NY evening and the car refused to start. It turned over but refused to start which was odd because I had driven it a few hours earlier with no problems at all as far as starting. All the lights, dashboards displays and even the top worked fine, it just wouldnt start. I finally got the guy I bought it from on the phone and he told me it wouldnt start probably because it was the fuel pump. Anyways, then I brought up the CarFax report that I ran earlier. It showed the milage was at 98,xxx miles in 10/98 then it went to 87,xxx miles in 11/99 then to 13,xxx (which I figure to be 113,xxx) in 2001. He stated that there was noway that could be correct because he knew both owners of the vehicle and in fact it was a 52,000 mile car. Carfax also showed the vehicle was sold at an auction in 2001 which he also claims is untrue. Now my dilema is there is a lot of evidence on the car itself to say its a 52,000 mile car but also theres evidence to point to it being a 152,000 car. For example, interior is near perfect except for some cracking in the leather seats but by the same token there is some rusting in the door jams on the drivers side. The undercarriage is very clean but there is some corrosion in the engine bay. I need advice from some of you guys and gals as what to think. |
