Don't worry with your kid's behavior so far I doubt this will be the biggest impediment to her getting a college degree.
As far as KSCoyote goes, it is impossible to argue with these ACLU people. They're the kind of people that want to sue a homeowner when a burgular is injured breaking a window to get in a house.
What..........my daughters behavior......explain this to me, please. Everyone is so shocked with her reply to a woman that said 'I"M GOING TO KILL YOU", are you out of your mind??? You really think she should have been the adult?
Get real. Oh yeah........She is really a bad kid............if all I have to worry about is her chewing gum, not dressing out for PE, because she had a stomach ache, and telling some crack ***** to F off, then I would be happy with that. She is in bed at 9:00 every night, doesn't steal, do any drugs/smoke, all of her friends are good kids, she is honest, she is a sweet girl...............
While I can begrudgingly understand your momentary alarm as a mother, do you really think that 2-days after graduation anyone will know or care about your daughter's high school conduct file?
I can assure you -- I have been involved in the hiring of numerous employees, and not once did I, or anyone involved with the decision, check on or even care about a high school conduct folder! The day after graduation this information becomes as meaningless as who won Homecoming Queen your sophomore year!
Seriously -- crack open a Diet Pepsi, slip a CD of your favorite music into the player of your 'Stang, and go for about a 3-hour cruise on your favorite strip of road! Everything will be OK -- all of this energy you are putting into this effort is doing nothing more than raising your blood pressure! Life is too short -- save the drama for when it really matters!
And to quote Forrest Gump, "That's all I have to say about that...." :thumbsup
That's just it............I don't want her to have a regular job. She will be going to college, and she will have a career. That is where the conduct file will make her or break her. What if she wants to be a lawyer, you think this won't come up, what if she was prosecuting a black man? or defending a white man accused of white supremacy hate crimes? I am thinking of her future............
I seriously don't think that her conduct in highschool will come up like you imagine unless she's going for a security clearance with the government and that comes up in a background check. As far as a lawyer's background coming up in a case... they try the case, not the lawyers involved.

My best friend is a trial lawyer. He has successfully defended a Black man accused of murder during a high-profile trial. I can also assure you that in his high school and early college years, he was hardly a model of proper behavior!
If your daughter goes on to college, does well, handles herself with grace and intelligence, she will do well in this country!
KS I'm asking you to provide the logic behind your counterpoints to DWRutledges points where you simply just dissent to his opinion and do not expand on as to WHY you disagree.
No but as many judicial precedents go, if the T shirts and such are ruled as allowable, it will act as a stepping stone to carry in something that definitely should not be allowed in schools under the decision of "Irresponsible Parent vs. State of California". While that can be appealed to higher courts, that's still more wasted money over a mole hill, not a mountain.
Woe to him who builds his palace by unrighteousness, his upper rooms by injustice, making his countrymen work for nothing...Does it make you a king to have more and more cedar?Did not your father have food and drink? He did what was right and just,so all went well with him. He defended the cause of the poor and needy, and so all went well...But your eyes and your heart are set only on dishonest gain,on shedding innocent blood and on oppression and extortion. You're wrong. All university applicants' school records are reviewed when making decisions for admittance.

Please provide some evidence of this.
I don't recall the ACLU ever taking this kind of case, since it doesn't involve CIVIL LIBERTIES!
I noticed you have 17 posts, yet you're speaking as if you know me or something . . . are you the newest operative assigned to me?
:thumbsup

Um, I don't recall reading anywhere that KSCoyote is affiliated with the ACLU. My understanding of that organization (and I'm not a member) is that they would not see this as a freedom of speech issue either. I don't think you need to slam the ACLU here...they are not airing these vapid opinions.
Saying "t-shirts don't affect education" is silly and irresponsible. What's to stop kids from wearing t-shirts with porno images on them, or hate slogans, or whatever else "the Constitution" allows you to say.
And it doesn't stop in the classroom. I challenge KSCoyote to go to work wearing a t-shirt saying "The Pope eats bat sh*t", and hand the boss a copy of the Constitution when he/she tells KS to lose the shirt or lose the job.
As I've said before, employment is different from education. One involves a contract made in the private sphere, the other involves a mandatory government program.
Porno falls under obscenity, which is unprotected outside of one's home, or private enterprise.
Is it so hard to understand?
And no, I am not affiliated with the ACLU, I studied anthropology and engineering.

why does this need to be in the 2005 Mustang forum? it's clear that i don't agree with wldchc and KSCoyote on much other than cars. you guys are so far out in left field it's really sad. let's just stick to discussing 2005 mustangs in here, and we'll all get along much better.

Yeah, I've already asked to have the threads merged.

I had a very speckled record from conduct in HS and I got in and attend Georgia Tech. I know GT isn't the best school in the nation or anything, but there aren't a ton a whole lot better.
so now you're wrong.

Are you from Georgia?
They have to take you if your parents are residents, and you passed H.S.
That's not the case for California Top Tier Schools, -same goes for Ivy League.
I'm pretty sure you didn't have White Supremacist leanings on your record, did you?
You may get in to "some" ivy league schools, but I can almost guarantee it's a strike against you at Berkeley, UCSB, UCLA, USC, UCSD, or UCSF.
I've sat on a few scholarship boards, and your conduct absolutely affects your ability to earn scholarships, even in states where acceptance is guaranteed.

My son who attends a public school in Florida was taken out of class for wearing a plain white t-shirt in a school that allows kids to wear rebel flags on their shirts...I called the school to complain about him missing class and told them my opinion of their dress code ( in a professional manner) and moved my son along....end of story. I have more important things to worry about with my child than the clothes he wears to school.
If he ever spoke to any adult the way this child did he would be in some serious trouble, I take care of these sort of things with adults. I teach my children to give respect when it is given to them and if they are mistreated in any way then come to Mama.....

If that woman is threatening to harm your daughter, you should have contacted police to see what could be done about it: that's the way the issue should be adressed, not thru swearing back at her.
I doubt that your daughter replying in that way (="F off") will have any positive effect on the matter.
I personally am not shocked about your daughter's answer and not shocked either that she made the mistake of using those words, after all at 13 she is just a kid and kids screw up more than often and finally in this world I don't get surprised anymore by anything.
But then it's the role of a parent to make the kid understand that such a language is not appropriate under any circumstance and therefore not tolerated.
It's not because someone else (=that woman) decides to lower herself by using a type of language surely not appropriate for a lady, of for anyone for that matter, that other people should go the same way.
Good examples need to be followed, not bad ones.
IMHO.
