Default Track Question

I really wasn't sure where to put this post because its not really about drag racing, so I didn't think it belonged in the drag racing thread, and I knew just about everyone reads through the community thread, so I put it here. If it needs to be moved to a different thread, anyone with the ability can move it

I want to know what my Mustang is capable of, and I want to know the best way of doing so. I had thought that I could just do this at a nearby track, but I have absolutely NO CLUE about regulations, rules, safety stuff, etc that track racing entails. I have thought about just using a stopwatch on my own, but thats not very accurate at all.

At a strip, is it possible for someone off the street to just come in and run their car? I guess thats my main question.

lol, one of the main reasons I kinda wanna do this, is that my birthday this year falls on a Sunday, and the nearby tracks are open on sundays So i figured it would be nice to have a kind of party or something and make a day of it, lol

But if tracks don't just let anyone in, is there an accurate way to get a quarter time, 0-60, etc...?

Thanks alot for any feedback guys

I dont go to the track but i know most usually have street legal racing days. And im sure if you went and asked they will fill you in on everything.
As for doing it yourself my friend found something on ebay...cant remember what it is called that measures your quarter mile and 0-60 it was like $30 bucks or something.

Thats bout all i know.

Yeah man, most tracks do have open track run what you brung days. As for the safety requirements of those days, I'm not sure at all because I've never been on a track either. And yeah there are devices such as a G-tech that will compute those times for you. They normally go for $150-300, depending on how many bells and whistles you get on it.

These guys are right. As far as the safety guidlines the biggest difference is if you have a convertible or coupe ( in a conv. I think if you're 13 seconds or faster you need a helmet and basic roll bar). The rest is either common sense ie. all lug nuts present, operating doors etc. or how fast your car is ie. driveshaft loop, rollbar etc. Just call the track or check and see if they have a website.

At my local dragstrip they have a free for all day so mustangs, ricers and fast muscle cars can all race each other, they do a tech inspection before you get to the pits. And if they find anything that isn't up to par they let you race for the day but if you come back you better have it fixed. The only times you have to be aware of being safe is if you have the following, battery moved to the trunk, or nitrous. Also at the local dragstrip you can buy a nhra rulebook for cheap, well worth the money.

Okay thanks

Okay, I AM gonna try and head to the track on my birthday. If anyone has any pointers as to what/who I should take with me as far as equipment stuff, tools, etc... Please let me know what would be best. The nearest (reputable) track is about 4.5 hours away from me, and I don't wanna get there and find out that I needed a whole bunch of stuff that I didn't bring.
