Street racing is, in my opinion, a very imature and dangerous activity. Many people have gone out and seen The Fast and the Furious, and decided to take up this activity because Vin Diesel was soo kewl doing it. The movie called a car club that raced ilegally a "team". I would love to see anyone in such a "team" tell any legitamite racer about the "team" (and I would really want to video tape it if the racer was John Force).
Street racing posses many problems, a lost driver pulling out at the last second, or a person walking along miding thier own business.....and last but not least, if you get in an accident, where is the ambulance? they are at drag strips..... There are many tracks, and 4 have opened up within 75 miles of Los Angeles in the last 3 years. There is new legislation being planned in many cities to impound street racer's cars for one month.
Even the State of California is looking at cracking down on street racing by having police officers inspect cars for modifications, and these cops will not have to carry a book that lists carb numbers.....so your car can be impounded if it does not appear legal.
I am not a street racer, but I do like to race. I have paid $300 to go run at Willow Springs for a weekend, and will do it again. Paying $20 to go to a dragstrip is a deal
Very true.. Street racing is a dangerous hobby... while it will never go away, we couldve done without the recent explosion of people doing it. Some people do it the safe way, but it should still be brought to the track...
Good typing Twister!
Twister's right. And it is the innocent victims of street racing that are effected the most. There are other drivers on the roads ! And those drivers are Mothers, Fathers, Daughters and Brothers.
If you drive a powerful car, you need to be even MORE responsible on the roads.

Way to go Twister. Great piece of literature. Street racing is dumb, I bet you would feel great beating the civic next to you only to plow into some old lady walking down the street. Take it to the track!!
I agree with the sentiment and all (see my club's homepage for our official stance on street racing), but are you guys saying you never race and/or push your car hard on the street?
I myself have a remote area I use for testing. Is it right? No, but I'm out there by myself, there are no side streets, there are no other cars or people, only farm fields on both sides. The only person to get hurt is myself, and some vegetables.
I perfer the track by far and do most of my testing there.

First off, ANY kind of racing is dangerous. If you think racing is immature, then why do you do it, even on a closed track... you still arent 100% safe. Ask some of the guys that went to Corral Day this year about the 99 Green Mustang GT that was spraying... and what happened.
Oh, and guess what... its been going on WAY longer than since the fast and the furious came out... You know the James Dean movies? Back then and around the 40s, Street Racing was Pioneered. Thats right, your parents and perhaps even grandparents could have been 'street racers' at one point.

Umm, I take it you have never been to the 'real' street races. You go into a very deserted part of town, such as an industrial park at midnight where NO ONE is at after 5pm on a friday.
If you dont think accidents happen at closed drag strips, then you my friend, are very naive. Once again, I refer you to the Corral Day 99 GT accident.

That is total and utter bull $hit. You have every right to modify your car, the only restrictions are on exhaust / emissions. If this is made into law, I bet you it wont be more than a month before it gets taken to a higher court and the law be thrown out.
----------------------------------------------------------------
In closing,
I don't 'street race' my car... but I do go down to the 'street races' a few times a month to check things out. I don't exactly agree that Street Racing is right, but take things into perspective... people have been doing this for decades, its just now, people are doing it to the imports, and with the 'FATF' movie, its just compounded peoples interest.
Thats just the way it is...
and if you don't like it, thats just too damn bad.
Also...
One more thing to note here...
If a drag track was closer than 30 minutes away from the city, and was open late, and didnt charge $20 for admission (something like $10), im more than sure that the 'other' crowd would go and race there... and the track would still make money, because they'd pull in at least 100 cars on a weekend night.
maybe you should message greg@gld on the gld forums.

that's a pretty good idea... except for one thing...
Great Lakes Dragaway is 30mins to up to an hour away from some people if you live in Milwaukee, so it wouldnt work the best....
an IDEAL place in Milwaukee for a dragstrip of this kind, would be to the east of Miller Park, and to the west of the Casino, in that abandoned industrial area.

Umm, I take it you have never seen Southern California on a Friday nite? There is no such thing as a deserted part of town. I have seen street racing right smack center of residential areas. If you think it does not happen on busy streets, you are naive.
One MAJOR difference at a close drag strip, EMT's. There is always an Emergency Team at a track. If there is only one and it has to leave, then the racing is stopped until it gets back. This was the case one nite @ Famoso, Bakersfield Ca.
