Sorry, I just have to vent on this, Truck drivers for the most part are good drivers but...I know, cars pull in front of you, yada yada yada. but....Why do they always pass trucks going about 5 under in the right land and pass them in the fast lane and taking forever to do it holding up traffic and making people slam on their breaks because they just decide to meander into the fast lane especially when there is a lot of traffic moving in the lane. Why, oh why do they do that????
They also go way, way faster than they are supposed to go, there is a reason for that, your weigh a freaking million tons. I have had trucks in the fast lane ride my tail when I was going between 70-80.
I say this because just before Thanksgiving my brother in law lost both his kids to a propane tanker that decided to weave into their lane. That is what it says on the police report. No one should ever have to loose their kids especially due to an idiot.

man that is terrible.
i know a couple truckers, both of which are very responsible drivers (owner/operators), but they tell me all the time about how most of the drivers out there just do whatever they want because truckers rarely get fined or pulled over, and even when they do, if they drive for a corporation, the boss pays the bill.
i think the problem nowadays with trucking is that because of the good money, its an easy way out for alot of schmucks looking for a quick buck.
they go to school for a little while, and then take their bad driving habits out onto the highways, where theyre dangerous.
my condolences to you and your brother in law.

In one paragraph your whining about trucks slowing up the hammer lane, in the next your whining about yourself holding up trucks in the hammer lane. I seem to think the problem lies within yourself.
Everyone has the exact same right to the road as everyone else, even if they want to act like an idiot. It is your inherent responsibility to watch out for them, and make adjustments to their behavior, regardless if they are right or wrong in their actions. You cannot let your guard down for one second because that is all the time it takes to get wasted by someone else's mistake.
I'm sorry for your loss, but do you know why the driver weaved over? Might have been something in the road. That is why you stay away from trucks on the road. To hell with the blind spot theory, just stay way the hell away from trucks on the road period. I have logged over one million safe miles in a truck. Are their dumb asses behind the wheel of some? Yes there are, but the percentage of dumb asses is almost nil compared to those in passenger vehicles.

Whining? Like I said before there is a reason why truck speeds are set at 55, they weigh a million tons. There is no reason whatsoever they should be going 70, don't care what you think. They cannot react as fast as cars going at that speed, and if I am in the fast lane doing 70, I am NOT going to pull over for a truck. Stay in the right lane where you belong.
I see trucks pass each other all the time, in heavy traffic, back and forth in the fast\right lane, there is no reason for that when cars are in the fast lane and almost have to slam on their breaks (could even be the end result in the photo), I see this more and more, and no, they are not trying to avoid anything except their time. Yes, there are people in cars who are idiots, but I am seeing more and more trucking accidents. Please answer why you need to go 70+MPH. When hauling tons of steel or Propane.

Um, did anybody notice that the car and the trailer are on the shoulder of the freeway? What was the car doing traveling on the shoulder? Was the trailer parked there, or was it moving?
If I had to guess, I'd say that the car was traveling down the shoulder in order to bypass stalled traffic (maybe to get to the next exit in a hurry) and the truck driver saw this guy coming and moved into the shoulder to stop him.
I'm no fan of truck drivers. They think they own the road because they're bigger than anybody else and they have less to lose in an accident with a car. They're nothing but ignorant bullies.
You people should be ashamed fo your selfs harping on trucker people could have died or worse that mustang was probably totaled out please a moment of silece for the mustang(screw the dead people)................
...and if I am in the fast lane doing 70, I am NOT going to pull over for a truck. Stay in the right lane where you belong.
Thats a great attitude to have, enjoy your short life as a self appointed 'law man'.
I'm not making any excuses for other truck drivers. What I am doing is giving you a valuable piece of advice, let the truck driver drive his truck, don't try to drive it for him. You may think your being somebody pulling this kind of silliness, the only thing your being is dangerous to everyone around you, including yourself.
I've have been where you are right now, you may not know it or want to admit it, but you being a 'road rager'. The is no reason in the world for you to endanger other drivers by preforming reckless acts to try and 'punish' those who you deem to be wrong doing. That's what the Police are for, so next time just move over and get the name and number off the truck, (company name and phone number is on the door, truck number is usually on the front fender or the side of the hood), and then call 911. After that call the company and ask for the safety department, believe me, they will listen to you and take action on the driver.
Coincidentally, in a conversation about our employers a couple months back. A fellow Mustang and 18 wheeler driver I spoke with at Buttonwillow went off about how the log book all truck drivers are legally required to carry and document there travel and present at each weigh station are filled with bull$ht. He called it something like bull$ht book or something it had a name, I don't remember. This log book is to document the hours driving and resting, etc. He went on to vent about how there are many truck drivers without the proper license for the number of axels they are piloting. He then continued to go on and on about the number of ESL drivers being hired by trucking companies due to the lower wages they will accept. I think being able to read highway signs is important, the DMV shares this view. Kind of scary, because in my experience truck drivers often think the roads were built for them, just as some passenger car drivers think.

Everyone has the exact same right to the road as everyone else, even if they want to act like an idiot.
First, NOBODY has a RIGHT to the road. Period. Driving is not a right. If it were a right they wouldn't make you get a license. That license belongs to the state and can be taken away at any time for any reason...like being stupid.
Second, holding up folks by driving as slowly as you like in the left lane accomplishes several things, none of them good:
It angers those who understand that not everyone wants to travel at the same speed and therefore, for the sake of safety and convenience, cars traveling at different speeds should be in different lanes.
It makes cars that want to go faster than you do pass you on the right which is less safe than passing on the left because of the proximity/position of mirrors on cars in countries where drivers sit on the left.
It shows that you believe that your time is more valuable than the time of anyone else on the road. Selfish and childish.
If there is someone who wants to pass you (and they aren't in a Japanese import) move over and let them hurry up and get their ticket first. Anytime anyone passes you on the right you are in the wrong lane and that's your fault.
Look, you can only drive one vehicle at a time. Drive it. Don't try to drive anyone else's car for them by "teaching them a lesson." Just let it go and do the best you can do behind the wheel. Anyway, that's what they taught us in traffic school the last time I had to go because of aggressive driving.

Geez, don't be so defensive, I can see just because you drive or drove a truck it is near and dear to you, I am in no way a road rager, it is rare cops pull over trucks, don't know if they are paid off or what. If I am in the fast lane going 70+ and a car pulls behind me, I will get out of his way, Trucks carrying who knows what, has no reason to be going that fast, it is a question of physics, Can you stop on a dime? I am sorry to say that trucks do not own the road, that I should shudder and quake when they are around. You think that because you weigh so much that you own the road. Sorry to tell you it is equal, I have seen many trucks keep vehicles from passing. Take that picture for instance, what if there was a guy taking his pregnant wife to the hospital and had to get through traffric, and the trucker pulls in front of him???? and you say I try to be a cop?? give me a break.

I'm coming home from work, trying to get home in time for another appointment. The right lane is closed up ahead because of construction and traffic is backed up for about two miles. I'm traveling down the right lane so that I can merge into traffic, and I come up behind a semi that is blocking the right lane so that cars cannot bypass stalled traffic. Conveniently, there is another semi in the left lane leaving a space so that the "self appointed law man" can merge when the time is right. Nice. (Keep in mind that this construction had been going on for the last two years, so this scenario was common.)
Out of pure frustration, I attempt to get around this jerk-wad by going around him on the shoulder. As I get beside him, he moves his rig over, completely caves in my drivers door, and proceeds to laugh at me in his side mirror.
The next day I called the trucking company and explained what happened. Their response? (Laughing) "Well, you shouldna been trying to pass in the shoulder!" (CLICK). So I called the police. We went to the scene of the accident, told him what happened. His response? "Well, it's your word against his. If you want me to ticket the trucker, then I'll have to ticket you, too."
So I was left with a caved in door and no recourse, only to witness the same scene over and over throughout the course of construction.
So tell me more about what the police are for. Tell me more about punishing wrong doers. Tell me more about what trucking companies will do. Tell me more about how much they'll listen to complaints. Tell me more about endangering other drivers by performing reckless acts. You're either incredibly nieve, or incredibly stupid.

You are taking my comments the complete wrong way. It is not a competition about who owns the road, that is a very poor approach to driving. It is about staying alive by not putting yourself in harms way. Keep jacking around with big trucks and you will eventually come across an idiot behind the wheel of one, (sounds like you already have with the tailgater). You will end up being dead right about the physics of big trucks, key word being dead. The whole point of my musing is to stay way out of harms way, not make it easier for truck drivers speed. You have the right to go to violent areas of town and hang out on street corners taunting gang members. Doesn't make sense from a personal safety standpoint does it? Same applies to driving in close proximity to big trucks, which can be just as dangerous.
Even if you don't run across an asshole driver you still need to worry about all kinds of ways to die around a big truck. I've seen all kinds of stuff fly off trucks that can kill you deader than hell in a blink of an eye. Not just improperly secured loads, but even a lowly gator (tire tread) flying off can end your life. Just look sometime, how many gators do you see laying around on the highway? I've seen guys with extremely safe driving habits and spotless driving records make just ONE small mistake in twenty years of driving. Problem with making that ONE small mistake in a big truck is that usually somebody in a car ends up dead.

Peace.
You need to address that aggressive driving style of yours before you end up killing somebody. Of course your not going to get a response from a company for passing on the shoulder. And that driver proved my point about 'punishing' wrong doers, it was pretty damn unsafe for him to merge over and waste your car, even if you were illegally passing him on the shoulder.
And why are YOU so special that you don't have to wait on the construction like everyone else? Why do YOU have the special right to flyby everyone else in the lane that's blocked off, and merge over at the last minute before the barricades? The reason the truck drivers are blocking that lane, (which I personally don't condone), is to keep aggressive drivers from totally wasting the flow of traffic. That is why I don't condone doing it, because an aggressive driver will do something totally dangerous to get around, like passing on the shoulder or in median.

After two years of putting up with that crap, I'd had enough. He was illegally blocking traffic more than a mile before the lane closure. All I wanted to do was merge in with the flow of traffic and he was preventing me from doing what I had a right to do. Honestly, the extent to which you will go to defend idiots is beyond reason. I get my car wasted and I'M the agressive driver?!
