Default Help Needed Swap 302 for 390?

Need help! Is it possible to swap a (390 block) from a 1971 Ford F-250 truck into a 1983 GT with a 302? And if this is possible what modification would I need to do this?

Story:

I currently have a 1983 5.0 Mustang GT convertable with a 302 engine, I've done some research for this model and I plan to restore but I would really like to add more horse power. I also have a 1971 3/4ton Ford F-250 truck that I plan to sale but before I do that I figured that since the truck has a larger engine why not swap. But I was not sure if that was possible just because they are both from the same manufacture does not mean they can easly be swap? Can someone help me to understand what is possible? and what is not?

Thanks
Mike T

I'm sure it can be done, how much structural modifying has to be done is beyond me though.

FE engines are hideously expensive to mod, rarely is so much money spent for so llittle gain.

Go with a 460, or better yet a stroked 351.

If you want a REAL unique and excellent performer, go with a stroked 351C.

Default Bad Idea

Probably a bad idea. the 83 was never meant to carry a big block FE, so you will need to gut the front end of the 83 to make room, and even then count on some massaging of the shock towers. You'll need a tubular K member, custom made motor mounts (and figuring out where exactly they need to be attached is tricky); a tall cowl hood (probably need at least 3", maybe more); your exisitng serpentine and accessories won't work, so make sure you get the alternator, starter, water pump, etc. with the 390.

You'll need a new tranny, probably a C3 built to mate up, though getting the thing to fit the transmission tunnel will call for more hammer work. You'll be cutting that tunnel to get access to the transmission, too, so count on some sheet metal work and interior work with carpet and such. You'll be needing a shifter as well, of course.

You'll also need a new, heavy duty radiator, some cusotm made hoses and pipes, lots of custom bent fuel lines, etc.

Bad Idea.

Just get you a 5.0 stroker crate motor, and everything will bolt right up. If you MUST have a mountain of torque more (you'll get a real nice boost from a stroked 347, but...), consider a kenne bell supercharger.

A 390 swap? Like KS said, why stop there - go for a 460 if you want to make that much trouble.

"Free" motors can be like white elephants - you spend far more to make the "free" motor work than its worth..
