I was driving a 1977 F-150 SWB 4x4 with a built 351M.
2 factors - I inherited the vehicle as a totalled vehicle, and the insurance agent hadn't seen all the work I'd done to it that summer.
It WAS around $100 as the vehicle was considered a driver without any real worth. After he SAW the truck it was reclassified as a "Sport Truck."
I also got 2 tickets driving the company car that didn't have a working speedometer.
Back in the day, I think having a 4WD added quite a bit to insurance premiums. I guess that was before the whole SUV craze, back when having 4WD meant that the driver might, possibly USE 4WD and consider actually *GASP* getting off the pavement at some point. I guess that there is more likelihood of one being driven in snow, etc. as well. I know that having 4WD still adds a little to insurance, but in this day and age of AWD and 4WD vehicles all over the roads, I don't think it adds quite as much (it didn't seem to make much difference with the 4WD, 4.0L Ranger I recently had and it was only a couple of years old when I got it). To me, the funny thing about that is that 4WD vehicles can be safer. Being light in the rear, that Ranger would often spin in gravel (as in pulling out of the parking lot at a boat ramp)and on hills, especially when pulling out at a particular redlight in town. My '94 Chevy 2WD pickup used to actually slide backward with the tires spinning at that light. Thankfully, no one was ever close behind me when that happened. With the Ranger, though, I would just flip the switch over to 4WD high and pull out, no problem, without ever spinning or sliding at all. In fact, I don't think I will ever buy another pickup that doesn't have 4WD. Of course, those tickets didn't help your premiums, either!

It also didn't help when the agent saw me beat a Corvette in it on Topeka Blvd.

That is $10 more than I pay for full coverage value appraised insurance on the Saleen every six months.
My advice to you from years of hard won wisdom. To hell with hot cars when your under thirty, just write them off and drive something cheap as dirt on gas and insurance. Save your money for the important things in a young man's life, namely women. Hot women are a lot more fun than hot cars. Hanging in clubs with hot women when your young is a lot more fun than hanging in parking lots with a bunch of other hair legs with hot cars. The tables turn when you hit thirtyish, hot women are harder to score and hot cars are easier to afford.

Strangely, that also seems to be just about the point when having the latter (a hot car) can help balance the equation in your favor when trying to get the former (hot women). So why in the he!! did I wait until I was already married to get a Mustang GT?? Oh, well, it's still fun.

Nice post, I guess I'll just save up for now and spend some of the cash with my girl.
