1) Wind. The kids/wife sometimes complain about wind - so want the windows up. Having the top down gives much better visibility and "openness" which is why I wanted a 'vert. Like wind? Ridden in the back seat yet? LOL! Theres 50% more wind in the back, I think. (90 GT vert)
2) Heat. Top down, windows up, AC jamming! I stay cool - which can sometimes be important, such as when in rush hour traffic.
3) Cold. Same as above.
Ive seen what I think are "why buy a vert if your going to do this" type of things:
A) 75-80 degrees outside. I'm talking about a "blue flu" type of day. Yet the top is up. For the love! Put it down every chance you can or sell it to someone who will enjoy it!
B) Top down, and all but ONE window is up or down. When you see that, its because the windows is broken! lol!
C) Top down in the rain. Actually, this is funny because I talked to this guy at a gas station. Me smilingly: "Little wet aint it?" Him: "Driving down the road nothing gets wet because the wind blows the rain up and over the car." In any case, I'm not trying it.
D) I once saw a couple of kids standing up and jumping around while someone else was driving down the road. Top down, not a care in the world (nor about the kids!) Had it been my kids that would have been the last time they got in the car!
I agree with you SilverSnake. Why have a convertible and put the top down with the windows up. It looks stupid and makes me and others think why did that idiot buy a convertible in the first place. I especially hate the people that drive around with the top down and only one or two windows up or both back windows up. When I first bought my vert and drove with the top down my wife put her window up and I got on her case to put that window back down because I am not going to be called what I call other vert owners that do that.

One reason for putting your windows up (temporarily) would be a cell phone conversation (makes it quieter) or the need to be heard in the back seat.
Other reason is because you are driving around with a female, whose hairdo is far more important than whether or not you and your car look like some beemer-schemer headed to starbucks.

Front windows down, back windows up! The "Hi, I'm an idiot" look!
Really, cold sunny days, heater blasting, top down, windows up.
Long tunnels-- windows up if you don't have earplugs!
Two blonds lock their keys in their car, first one says to the second one, "we better figure this out quick, looks like rain coming and we left the top down!"

And parked, top down windows up make the proximity sensor more effective, harder to grab the CD's and stuff!

Interesting...always wondered about that. I have been told that the wind can cause some damage when riding like that...the shaking can cause the windows to become loose in the frame. I just don't 'cuz it looks goofy!
I could be wearing a bozo suit and wouldn't look goofy in my ride!

One of the rear windows is a little loose, come to think of it

If my kids are in the car, the windows are up because it cuts down on the noise and too much wind bothers them. When it's just me I put the windows down.
I ride around with the top down in light sprinkles, mostly because I'll get caught up in them on the highway, the wind does indeed keep the water out as long as you're moving. There are 2 reasons I have the windows up with the top down 1) lighting a cigarette or 2)the phone rings and I really need to answer it.

I drive top-down windows down in city traffic to get the breeze at lower speeds, but when I hit the highway (and my usual 80mph plus speeds) the windows go back up to prevent getting beat in the face by the wind. Also, on the REALLY hot and REALLY humid days here in central Texas (last three days have been 50% humidity or more and average highs of 104 degrees) I'll go top down windows up, A/C full blast, because with the A/C on and the top up I get massive wind noise and the back window shakes too much, besides, with the cold A/C blowing on me, the leather seat under me, and the extra wind over my head, it's real comfortable.
I do know some people who NEVER have the top down on their convertibles though... usually infuriates the heck out of me! lol
I probably won't have another convertible after this one though, as the Central Texas climate makes it VERY impractical (too hot/humid to want the top down for very long for 1/3 of the year, too cold/damp for the next third of the year, and either too dusty or too rainy for basically the rest of it!!!
