Good point JB02GT, it can work in reverse, for people who just want to race. It would be nice if Ford offered more of a variety.
vantage, I didn't mean it would beat me but the '04 GTP Comp G is Supercharged
3800 V6 with 260 HP and some factory suspension work (Comp G), it handles great. And with front wheel drive I don't believe you lose as much HP through the drivetrain on a front wheel drive. Both have 3.31 gears. If you've ever driven one they're pretty impressive for a 4 door.
Don't get me wrong, like I said in another thread I think my '06 Mustang GT is the best car on the road. And 'price per pound' I think my Mustang is hard to beat.
I was just trying to make a point.
You are right, I am a baby boomer, and I drive the mustang to relive my youth. I grew up in the 60's and 70's knowing and seeing the high performance cars run in the junkyards, smoking tires and all! All beef, no addons, no assemble required!

I will also point out that many baby boomers drive Mustangs not to relive their youth, but because they now can afford the car they always wanted. Although the Mustang is “affordable” a great many folks still could not afford them because of families and other bills. Now after many of those bills have passed behind them (read graduated and moved on in life) and they make more money than they did when younger, they can get the toys they once wanted but could not have.
So it is not always about “reliving” one’s youth. Some of us simply didn’t have that stuff when we WERE young.
I also find it funny how when someone older gets what they have always wanted in life they are looked down on by others. They have worked their entire lives and given to their families while getting virtually nothing for themselves in many cases. It is called sacrifice. So let that middle age man have his toy without looking down on him. He is, after all, the one who really deserves to have what he wants.
…. Well that is just how I see it.

I do think Ford could have 'Deluxed' the Mustang a little more though.
My wife has an '04 Grand Prix GTP Comp G and it is a great deal more Deluxe than my '06 GT Premium Coupe. Hers stickered for $31,500 and my Mustang for
$29,620. Hers weighs within 50 lbs of mine has 4 doors (with the style of the car doesn't look too bad) is a foot longer, and when you get in, the smell of leather is exillerating. It is completely loaded, Supercharged, moon roof, Satellite radio, On Star, Tap Shift (full time auto OR stick)) and will run right with my Mustang.
I do like the looks of my Mustang better though but, for the price, weight and performance of the GP I think that the automakers can make a great looking, performing, and handling car with a good deal of luxury for a good price if they want to!

You can have the leather smell too... I do...
The smell of the Leather is one of my favorite features of my BULLITT, even now at almost 7 years old.

I don't see the problem with the weight of the car, if the cars, almost universally, are getting faster.
I love my fat pony.

I can relate to Lcholladay's comment 100%. To your point about money; my experience as a baby boomer is that money was not a key factor in not buying a Mustang until I was in my 50's. I spent 26 years in the military and every place I lived, except overseas, we purchased a home and turned it into rental property when we moved so there was always cash flow and good investments made to this day. I think there are a large number of baby boomers who also did quite well.
I didnt own a Mustang in my parenting years because I didnt have time to relive my teen years and early 20's, and I also could not find a way to pile a growing family into a Mustang, so we always owned larger vehicles.
Fast forward to today. I have my manual Pony and I have fun with it, and the wife cant jack it because she cant drive a stick . And best of all I can share my weekend drives in the country with my grandkids.

Reason: spellun
First the Shelby is over two tons now I read about the "vanishing point" challenger that is gonna weight 4200 pounds. My little notch weights around 2800. I thought my Cobra was fat at 3600+. What is happening to vehicles? One would think they would be trying to squeeze more power and mileage by using less weight. This can't be airbags and side impact beams weighing all that. Where is the weight coming from?
I dont think this accounts for all the added weight but yea, airbags are one reason. As is the desire to have larger displacement engines, larger rotors, larger tires, etc.
Whatever you see in the fast-food business detroit will do soon aftter. As the food and drink goes mega-size so do the cup holders and size and weight of the car.
i think that its all proportional. More power in the car, more weight in the car equals just about the same speed, but with a fatter and safer car. i think that is what they are thinking
If Ford shaved a few hundred pouds off the Mustang, it would be GREAT! I currently get 27-28MPG highway and if that happened, I believe 30MPG would be no problem. I don't know where all the weight is going, definitely not in the hips..... However, if it is MOSTLY safety equipment, I'm fine with it. I drive my 2 1/2 y/o daughter in my car when I have her.
Only problem with that line of thought is that all the kids now will be looking for Civic's and Neon's to relive their glory days in the future because that's all they can afford now.
I'd sooner shoot myself in the head than drive either of those.
I don't mean to change the topic of this thread, but the way kids in general are these days, the US is breathing it's last breaths as we speak. End of discussion unless you like PMing.
But yes, I have seen Musclecars getting a little chunky. I mean, HOW many chins does a S197 body kit have now? My New Edge has one. (not bashing them- I'm just trying to make a joke)
In the case of the S197, sure, they're a little larger than the New Edge and a little heavier, but they're fast as Hell stock.
About affording one... Right now I could afford to buy an 07 Saleen. BUT I have other commitments, such as college, food, gas, insurance, etc. That's why more kids don't drive Mustangs/Camaros/etc.
My dad tells me about when he was my age how he built his own cars (no Mustangs unfortunately- just Camaros and GTOs). He said everybody had Camaros and Superbees and they were the "everybody has'ems" of his day.
As for me. Well, by the time car manufacturers revert to "early 21st century nostalgic/retro engineering," other things will have changed too. We should enjoy the horsepower while we can. As soon as there's alternative energy cars out there in mass production, horsepower will dwindle because some suit says "We don't need it."
Imagine going to work in a 20hp water-powered car? That would suck. Or speed down the highway at a blazing 45 mph in your new solar minivan. Hahahah that'd suck.
It's all because of PINHEADS! Corporate pinheads, government pinheads....pinheads are taking over . The truth is Ford don't care all that much about performance Ford cares about selling cars...that's what they do, or at least try to do. If they thought they could make a mint selling 3200 lb/500hp 'stangs they would....eerr at least until the pinheads in the government and at the insurance companies decided you were having to much fun for your own good and sent in the fun Nazis to stop it. Basically there is a huge group of folks out there that think you are not smart enough to make sound decisions for yourself even though you are an a adult and that only they can save you from yourself by mandating your safety thats why you can't have the car you want. Besides this is all pretty much a moot point because once the new government mandated fuel standards take effect you can kiss performance in any form bye-bye. Pinheads!...there outta be a law........

As a former Gear Head that built a 68 GTCS to run low 13 second 1/4 mile(@ 5690 ft of altitude) in the late 70's. I am liking the hell out of my 07 GTCS. 30 years of twisting wrenches has taken it's toll. I appreciate a little more comfort these days. My new stang runs very close to my memories of days past and will surpass it when the blower goes on. In the old days you couldn't hardly find hipo parts for Fords. Nowadays you can buy anything for a Mustang. I am having a blast with this ride.

seems like almost all cars start getting heavier eventually, even imports(Civic?). i think the S197s are great cars, even at 2 tons. you can make cars lighter, racers have done it 100 years. you pay for it in streetability though. there are many good reasons that light, exotic "supercars" are expensive...
