On the positive, the Hurricane engine program is going to sprout two new engines said to be 5.8 and 6.2 liters. Word is that the program is on full boat not only for the trucks, but for the Mustang too! The engines are for sure to be offered in the redesigned 2010 Mustang, but are even possible to land as soon as late 2008 in the current Mustang! No word yet on the horsepower ratings or technical specifications. Autoweek Magazine has reported that Ford may actually use the “Boss” name to brand the line of Mustang V-8 engines. While we have previously reported that cylinder deactivation systems would likely be part of the picture, it is unknown what the entrance of the Hurricane engine family will bring.
Also, it's becoming more likely that the new 265hp 3.5 liter V6 will indeed be coming to the Mustang. Ford Powertrain VP, Barb Samardzich was quoted in the news recently saying that, “the engine can be used in rear-drive vehicles such as the Mustang.”
By 2009 or 2010, the Mustang is also likely to be sprouting some new siblings. Word of the Lincoln Coupe that we reported on earlier this year is intensifying and there is even talk of a Mercury version of the Mustang platform. A clay model appears on one of Ford’s Bold Moves videos from their documentary series that is reported to be a concept car planned for the Detroit Auto Show in January.

My god! It's 1986 all over again... that new Mustang is... THE FORD PROBE!!!
(begin conspiracy theory rant)
1986 Ford wants to axe the RWD/V8 Mustang in favor of one that is FWD and uses 4-bangers with an optional six-shooter under the hood. It will be built at Mazda plants, using mazda parts, and sharing a Mazda platform (MX6/626, both pretty good cars in their own way, but not MUSTANG material). The UAW and Mustang fanatics cry foul, and the Mustang soliders on for three more years, the FWD Mustang concept is introduced and sold as the Ford Probe. 1989 Ford wants to axe the Mustang again, but again, the UAW and Mustang fanatics prevent such blasphemy.
Fast-forward to 2006!
Ford has introduced a retro-style 'stang to the cheers of most fanatics, but has sued Mustang clubs and businesses who cater to the owners of these cars over the use of the Mustang name. The retro-stang is being built in Mazda plants using some Mazda parts. Ford already wants to totally redesign the car after just a five-year run, and the concept bears a strong resemblance to the old Probe! Not only that, but there are V8/FWD Lincolns now, so Ford could put a V8 in the thing and still be FWD...
Afterall, Ford doesn't care about what we want, heck, they don't seem to care if we'll buy what they build, they'll just sell a division that IS selling cars and making money (Aston Martin) to stay afloat while building junk here!
(end conspiracy theory rant)
Also, what the heck is wrong with an independant rear suspension? I want one!!!!

This is the same unfortunate philosophy that put Ford and GM where there are now . They continue to build vehicles that the consumer doesn't want. Yet amazingly, the foreign competition seems to know what domestic buyers do want. What a sad, sad commentary on American corporate management!

Let me just point out that if you READ the story you will find that the clay model shown is NOT the 2010 Mustang, but a Lincoln/Mercury concept car.
beat me to it! I was just about to post that.

The Later Probe GTs with the DOHC V6 were pretty quick for its day. Would rather have that than some of the Rice cars people are modifying.
Ummm... that IS one of the rice cars people are modifying!!!!
I don't have a pic of it, but when I was working at a parts store I had a regular customer who had a Probe GT with the BIGGEST wing and tackiest body kit I'd ever seen. Of course, he also had an ULTRA-CLEAN 5.0 Mustang convertible (virtually a clone of mine but maroon where mine's blue) and a bad-ass Chevy Blazer (old-school K5), always wondered why he riced-out the Probe, but he did all of the work himself (including some fiberglass and fabrication work) and did great work!
I didn't notice that the car in the pic was supposed to be a linc/merc because I took KS @ his word, lol, oops.
BTW, did anyone else notice that the Hurricane may be coming out with a 5.8L displacement??? Just what Ford needs, ANOTHER 351cid engine... lmao...
I cam imagine history books of Ford in the future:
Ford seemed determined to confuse the hell out of the consumer for four straight decades, then mysteriously took a decade off, just to add to the confusion again later. Engines of this displacement where named as follows:
351 Windsor
352 (same bore/stroke as 351s, but a different design so Ford did some creative "rounding up" much like they later did by naming the 4.9L 302 V8 a "5.0")
351 Cleveland
351 Modified
5.8L (metric-named 351 Windsor)
5.8L Hurricane

Are we sure about that? The article says that clay models are being studied for possible Lincoln and/or Mercury versions. That could be taken to mean that clay models for the Lincoln/Mercury models are being made and studied or it could mean that clay models of the 2010 Mustang concept are being studied to get ideas for a possible Lincoln/Mercury version. It really isn't clear from the article if the clay model is the concept for the next Mustang or for a Lincoln/Mercury version.

What I meant was compared to a civic, Celica, or the other sort. Rice can be in the way it looks, but I meant that I would rather have a PRobe GT than a pure import. They can be tastefully modified, but can be riced out... just like I have seen some Mustangs get Riced out.

Hey man!
I just said there was 2010 Mustang information and posted the links. The new cars to be made off the 2010 chassis is still Mustang info, IMO.
I didn't post that they were Mustang Clay Models -though they could be -you never know. They said the 2009 would be more modern.

I can't really form an opinion of whether I like it or not based on those pictures, even if those models are concepts for the next Mustang redesign. I do think that going more modern would be the thing to do, though. Go with something that is a good bit different than the current car but that is still recognizably a Mustang and get pictures out there early. That way, those who really want one of the current 'retro' Mustangs will know to go ahead and get one (thereby getting a sales boost toward the end of the run of the current body style) and those of us who are still a bit underwhelmed with the 'retro' look might have something to look forward to. Might even keep some previous generation Mustang owners from defecting to the MOPAR or GM sides when the SN95s begin to wear out.

Yeah, I planned on waiting till 2008 (now 2009) to decide on a new car . . Loan's paid off on my 2003 in 2008 . . .
