Default College next year.. any advice?

Ok guys, this is for every one thats been through college and has some advice to give. I'm going to college next year, and really have no idea what to major in. I know I can pick later, but could go for some personal experiences. I was thinking of majoring in somthing like Finance, but alot of people are saying thats to vague. What do yall think? I want a GOOD paying job, was also considering sports administration but the right out of college salary is averaged at like 40K .

Also, how do you go by getting scholarships? My councler at my school SUCKS and just gives me websites that list scholarships that require a essay, thing is they give away one scholarship and may get 10,000 entries. I don't know.. any advice on anything?

This is my last semester and I am SO glad its almost over. I, too, didn't know what major to pick and I ended up going with business management because I was told I could pretty much go into any field with this degree. What a load of crap! I haven't learned anything worth learning in my opinion. To me, a business management degree is as useless as a general studies degree. But, atleast I will have a degree in something. If you really want to go into Finance, make sure you are REALLY good at math because it ain't easy. It took me two tries to pass my finance class and I am average in math. Also, most of your teachers are probably going to be Chinese and Japanese immigrants who speak horrible english. That makes it even harder to learn. I wish I would have gone into kineseology or weather as I am really good in science. Can't turn back time, though.

Can't help you with the scholarship thing. I am fortunate enough to live in the only state that provides scholarship money to students. Only had to get a 2.5 GPA in high school and take some specific courses to the first four years of my school paid for. Took out student loans for the last year and a half.

What wrong with 40K out of college? Thats good money where I come from.

The first year or two ,no matter what your degree is going to be, everything that you learned in high school will be retaught to you in your core classes. I am still in college ( I work full time and attend part time so it is taking a little longer) and I am taking classes that pertain to my degree finally( I transfered and some credits did not transfer so I had to retake classes....WEE!!). I am actaully thinking of changing my focus of study to another part of engineering. Business Admin .is a fairly easy degree to achieve as is history.

If you want to do it fast and easy student loans would be the way to go. Look around for Grant's offered by your state, government money that doesnt have to be paid back. In GA we can get a scholarship from the state, it is the HOPE scholarship and you have to have a 3.0 or higher GPA in high school and maintain that through college. You also have to take a minimum of 12 credit hours a year to keep it as well. I am taking 6-9 credit hours a year so I cant get it but a firnd of mine does the same thing I do and he recieves a HOPE GRANT every semester so he doesnt pay sqaut for school. Thats the route I am going next semester. Just look around or else call the financial aid section of your chosen college and ask about the grants offered by your state.

Don’t be too worried about picking you major out right now the general classes will fill you up and give you plenty of time to decide, but on that note do something you want to do and you will be happy.

After sitting on a local scholarship committee for the last three years I can tell you the ones that require an essay ARE the ones you want to go for, most people are just plain lazy and people don’t fill out the ones that require a little time. This greatly improves your odds at getting them, and don’t over look those $500 and $1000 dollar ones get several of them and you will be sitting pretty…..

Most of your local scholarships I doubt would be online, but I would still check. I would say check with the counselors but you already said they sucked so I would check the school bulletin boards, and the local library, if you could find out who has been awarded them in the past you might have a better idea of how many are out there and who to contact. Also check the school clubs like FBLA, START and such, they often have local businesses that give out scholarships so find the teachers who sponsor those groups, should know. If you think about it you can pump out a short essay in an hour and even at a “low” $500 that’s some good money for an hours worth of work.

No partying AT all? That may be hard, but i understand what your saying. Basically, the deal is, if i go to a community college my parents will pay for tution but not board. If I go to a 4 year I have to find some scholarships. So If I do go to a community for a year I would have to live at my house or split a apartment like three ways with some friends. If you think about it, I would just be stalling, because I'm going to have to find a 4 year eventaully anyway...

Why not get most of your general Ed classes at the community collage, if parents will pay all the more reason, you can still look foe scholarships and save you parents some cash and learn the ends and outs of getting free money.

Living with your parents for the first year or two would be of great benefit, too many people I know go away and go hog wild and end up with very poor grades, all that freedom is too much temptation for many people………

I know this is a stupid reason. But... if I did stay, it would give me another year to save up for a GT or foxbody lol. I'm ready to get away though. Meet NEW girls, live by myself, I dont know though, I would most likely screw everything up and party hardcore.

Guilty as charged...
Don't major in liberal arts! Accounting seems to be the hot ticket these days.

Study hard, play harder. If the military is an option for you, they have scholarships available. I earned a 2-year NROTC scholarship and had my last two year of college paid for (tuition, books and $100 per month). The $100 a month has gone up but it's not enough to live off of regardless. There are 4, 3 and 2 year scholarships available.

That's what I was told too. I still have a lot of work to do. I also don't know what I want to do, but a business degree is better than no degree.

College is more than just what you learn in class. A great deal of what is so important about college is the experience. The most important things I learned in college were how to be on my own and how to learn things. One of the biggest things you get out of college is a view of the world that you didn't have before. Your instructors get paid whether you pass or not so they basically don't care if you even show up. It's all up to you. You learn how to find things out and organize things...a lot of things...at the same time as you're finding out about and organizing a lot of other things, all under a deadline. You learn self-reliance. You learn how to deal with obstacles you haven't even considered. You learn how long you can function without sleep.
You learn creative ways of finding things to eat.
These are all valuable life skills that will serve you well in the business world.
My advice is to get out of the house, get started at a four-year school, focus for those four years on getting your degree and living for the day when you no longer have to make decisions like whether to buy toilet paper this week or just use fast food napkins and save that money for beer.
Remember: there is no substitue for experience.
My 2/100ths.
