aww, I like this thread. I don't have this problem luckily. The biggest responsibility I have is going to work, going to school, looking after my brother and going to training. The end.. oh and maintaining a social life.
How about when the policies are put in place but as soon as you try to enforce them upper managment pulls the rug from under you underminds the authority they say you have and basicly make it so you have now power whatsoever . Anytime I try to enforce a policy my people basicly laugh at me. They know all they have to do is whine loud enough to upper management and they will get there way. And tell them to do something???
Isn't it forbidden to hurt someones feelings by telling them to do something.
Try having a supervisor who not only undermines your authority with the people you are supposed to be supervising by overturning your decisions without even asking why you made the decision in the first place but is also, apparently, schizo.
This guy would give no input or advice, even when asked, and would say, "You're the team leader. This is your responsibility to make this decision," but then he would get pissed off if the decision you made was not the one he wanted - and tell you had to do it his way, instead. Add in to that the fact that he was jealous of me (not being arrogant here - other employees said that they thought he was jealous of me, too) because I am, obviously, more intelligent than him and you can see why I quit that job to take one that pays less. Sometimes, your sanity is worth more than $$$.

Yes I agree my sanity is well worth more money than they could possibly offer me at this point. Its pretty much a proven fact that money only fixes a problem in the workplace on a temporary basis. I've already started testing the waters but it seems alot of companies are a little standoffish( nice word) about hiring disgruntled middle managment..So it isn't exactly easy being cheesy and there are bills to pay so Micky D's won't cut it. and neither will most others...

Someone once told me that when you have a boss and don't agree on day to day desicions, you're still in training. But when the both of you make the same decisions, it's time for you to move on because you require no further training.
Okay, if you have a schizo boss who quakes at the very thought of confronting employees or standing by one of your decisions? Drink heavily......
IT MEANS I'M IN A POSITION OF POWER, WITH NONE.. UNTIL THINGS GO WRONG ,THEN I CATCH HELL.
You too???
Survival in this position is relatively simple... you can fight ****, or roll with it, just remember **** rolls downhill. Also remember the story of ****'s life cycle, 1. **** happens 2. **** rolls downhill 3. **** hits the fan 4. **** goes everywhere.
Since I started looking at it that way? I catch less **** (hard to catch when you're rolling) the ****'s not as deep (haven't had to wear waders to work in awhile) and some poor dummy stepped up to be the new ****-catcher! (Hooray!)

With my job its a constant stuggle with the staff. I'm not in any kind of an authorative position but these guys that have been hired bring down the whole place. They trash our office room and make it look like a pig pen, they doodle all over the white board. They are also, constantly using very vulgar language. I am very adiment about getting these guys to shut up but they just stare me down and walk away then start mumbling amungst themselves. I don't know what my boss was thinking when he hired these guys, that the only word out of their mouth either starts with a "N" or is a four letter word. These guys have got to go. They drag down the morale of the whole business

Sounds like the commercial with the guy working with a bunch of monkeys.

Yeah I'm pretty sure my place of work looks like the monkeys commercial I sure can relate with how that guy feels. Its too bad that work has to be that way. The sad part is I don't remember it being like this before and now with the the younger generation ( not stereotyping and not all are like this either) like said before its a me generation and its hard to get them to care about anything..

I too can relate . I really don`t catch hell so much as have to stay late and get everything back on track while everybody else goes home . I too have had people jump over my head a few times . I went right to them and told them no more of that , stood my ground . Then made them do what I told them to do . I do know one thing , no matter what job you have there will always be those crappy days !

Part of that is certainly a lack of character on the part of the individuals, themselves, but part of it has to do with the climate of the workforce. See, I'm 35, so I'm kind of in the middle of the 'workforce.' People my age are the ones who are called Generation X (folks who born between 1963 and 1975), and some people like to call my generation 'slackers'. Thing is, previous generations (the baby boomers) are working longer and longer, refusing to retire - especially from the upper level positions. If I know I'm never going to move up the ladder because I'm going to be in my mid 50s by the time these guys retire and then I will probably be passed over for someone younger, then what is there to care about? Folks my age are unlikely to ever be a VP, President, CEO, etc. unless they are working for a company that belongs to their family. Middle management is, often, the best we can hope to achieve, and some will never even break that particular glass ceiling no matter how dedicated they are and, in some cases, this means there is no goal to work toward except more of the same. Of course, that assumes the company isn't going to close its doors and move to China tomorrow. See, that's another facet. I think people would be more willing to work hard and have company loyalty if companies still showed some loyalty to their employees. The climate today, however, is 'you are a dime a dozen - I've got a stack of applications in my office and could replace you tomorrow' or, even worse, "I can hire three illegals for what I have to pay you." Having loyalty to companies that would kick you to the curb in a heartbeat if it would save them ten cents on their bottom line doesn't show a strong work ethic - it shows that gullibility and naivte. It chaps my butt to hear companies go on and on about company loyalty when they have no loyalty to their employees. Just how stupid do they think we are?
I'd say that part of the problem with the generation just now entering the workforce is that they have seen their parents bust their butts and get nowhere so they probably figure, "What's the point?" I truly think that making retirement for upper management mandatory at age 58 would revitalize the workforce. I realize that 58 is not 'old' and it's not because folks older than 58 can't still be good at their jobs but because it would give younger employees something to strive for - and maybe bring some fresh ideas into play.
JB, Companies are only as good as their willingness to entertain new ideas. With that, they also entertain new ways of going about business and keeping good employees no matter what their age is. Sometimes they just don't think outside the box..... I do agree with you that companies have the attitude that they can replace you in a heartbeat. A successful business owner/mgmt. knows that, and takes advantage of their employees fears. I know I've been there. I have replaced a few managers with that attitude, and it's not pretty. Everyone is scared, he even told my secretary that if she took vacation, she wouldn't have a job when she got back! That's not management-that's a dictatorship. It took me a good 6 months until the employees finally grasped the concept that I was not like that. There was less tension in the air, and they were more productive. They learned that it was okay if they were sick and needed to call in, or their child was sick and they needed to stay home with them. That's family, and that's okay.....
