1)
Replacing the compressor itself isn't hard, it's a bolt-on job, but you've got to have the refrigerant recovered first, have the system flushed, replace the receiver/dryer and expansion valve/orifice tube, when doing the compressor, and have a vacuum pulled on the system when you're done to pull any moisture/debris out of the system. The biggest problem with do-it-yourself jobs when it comes to A/C work is that many parts stores will not warranty the parts when it's done by a DIY'er, even if it's done right. You can buy the parts and take them with you to a shop, but most shops won't warranty their work unless they buy the parts (a policy that's usually in place for two reasons: 1. to protect their profits from the price markup they usually charge the consumer after they bought the parts at a discount, 2. to protect themselves from having to warranty work done with inferior parts to what they usually use)
Honestly, the best way to do it is to have a shop do it that has a good reputation, puts their warranty in writing, and has a fair price for the job overall. You definitely end up saving money in the long run, especially if something goes wrong later on.
2) it's very much possible. All it would take is a weak spot in the glass, combined with a colder temperature on one side of the glass than the other. It could've started from a rock or debris impact (even if it didn't leave a visible mark at the time), a defect in the glass, or a natural weak spot from the curvature of the glass in question.
