So I get my mail, and there was a skymiles credit card app. It looked like it had been steamed open. I immediately called them, but the guy said that the department I need to talk to, is only open weekdays 8 till 8. WTF should I do?
Of course the postage paid envelope is going into my collection, which gets dumped in a mailbox every few months...

If it's only an application there shouldn't be any personal information like social security numbers and such on it. People looking for identity theft spend more time rumaging through your outgoing trash, not new mail. Now, if you had said you filled it out and put it in your mailbox only to find someone had opened it, then you'd have a problem.

OK, so I've added a few things to it. Check my Profile - too many to list here.
actually those preapproved applications are like gold to the id thief...in my other life i had to take a trip to miami to follow up on a theft ring that bought 2 houses in a guys name...traced it all the way back to the initial contact...a preapproved credit application the thief intercepted...too bad there aint much you can do until the thief makes his move...i'd join a credit watch agency so you know exactly if it happens and even call that company to decline it...hopefully nothin will come of it...but if it looks steamed it probably was and these things can mushroom
yeah it cant hurt to look into it. my grandma got a bill for almost half a million dollars cause someone stole her credit information. dont mean to try to scare you but it can happen.

ya dude...one of the homes in miami was over 600000 bucks in this poor guys name...other one was over 500000...and this guy lives in an apartment in nyc....hes freakin out cause he didnt know he coulda had a house in miami on his salary...its funny...you can be scrapin by like the rest of the workin stiffs and some guy uses your name to live like a kingpin...weird stuff...too bad the id thief has to go down...he'd make a great accountant
too bad the id thief has to go down...he'd make a great accountant
yeah but then the question becomes can you trust the guy to do it.

a mail box full of it!! I will look into the suggestion by
Nyt Muves!!

Really, all you can do is wait. Yes, you can put a fraud watch on your credit file, but other than that, just be vigilant in watching your credit. Now would be a good time to get all three reports and learn what is on your report so you can spot wrong info. Fortunately as mentioned, there is very littel usable informaiton in a preapproved applicaiton...no ssn #'s, no employment ino, usually no phone numbers, and no income or credit info...usually just your name and address..which is on every piece of mail in youyr box. I have a PO Box and a locked mail box at home. Packages have to come to my door. Will this absoultely stop a thief, no, but every little bit helps.
Even with a pre-approved credit application you still have to fill out personal information and send it in. I don't think you have much to worry about.

Why would someone steam it open, then put it back in your mailbox? If it were of use to them, wouldn't they just take it? It's not like you were expecting that particular piece of mail and would notice it's absence. More likely it got wet and opened on it's own, just looks like it was steamed. Regardless, watching your credit is a good idea for everyone.

A little off topic but I had a Shell credit card that I had used for online purchases. My bill came and it was $7000.00 due to some auto parts purchase in another state. How the heck will a company let you charge that much without ID? Of course that was about 10 years ago and things have changed. I have a credit card company now that will call me if any internet purchase is made.
Luckily it was taken care of, I don't know if they found the idiot.

Call all 3 credit beureaus and put a "fraud watch" on your name. I think this makes it where everyone has to call you before approving credit.
Thats true, but you have to call and do it over and over. It only lasts 90 days when you do it unless you can prove to them that there is a REALLY good reason. Lifelock keeps it in force for you among other things. Its amazing how much it cut down on the junkmail and phone solicitations too. I don't work for them or anything, just a very satisfied customer.
We started it when we recieved a pre-approved credit app for my 2 year old son. Keep an eye on your childrens' credit too as that is a very popular place to target. They get a valid SSN from a child very young, and know that no one will be checking it for a LONG time. That is also a popular source for SSNs for illegals.

Yeah, you're probably right. Though it would've had to have happened before it reached my mailbox, because my mailbox is locked.
Nonetheless, I've enrolled in a protection plan. I'd been kinda considering it for at least a year now, anyway.
It's better to have it and not need it... Even though I'd rather have bought some pulleys, or something like that, for the Stang.
Thanks for all of the ideas everyone.
