Thanks Tripleblack. I handed in my assessment, it was real crap but I don't care. lol.
Hope you get an "A+".
One other thing about the War between the States, in 1860 less than 6%of southerners owned slaves. Slavery was on its way out with or with out the war.
Most plantation owners relized they could get more production from their lands by sharecropping. Plus it was very expensive to own and maintain slaves.
another cause was the forming of West Virginia, by taking lands from Virginia and Ohio to make the state. Article 4 section3.

West Virginians wanted their own state (at least, some very loud mouthed ones did) before the war, but I don't recall it being a cause for the war - more of a result.
The importation of slaves had been outlawed for a long time - and there were frequent attempts (the creation of Liberia being one of them) to "return them to Africa", though the huge bulk of the younger slaves had been born in America, and had no skills or idea how to live a tribal existance.
Jefferson Davis published articles BEFORE the war predicting the end of slavery in the south with the advent of more modern farming methods - the creation of industries needing skilled labor - and with better education opportunities. Of course, these predictions worried the Norhern industrialists - the last thing they wanted was an industrialized South to compete with them.
Another factor that led to War after the Secession (the two events were not precisely synchronous) was the problem that the railroad barons had with their rights of way. They had just completed a very expensive series of bribes to high government officials to acquire huge swaths of potentially valuable land along their planned rights of way for railroads. This was of course in ADDITION to their existing systems.
The prospect of having to bribe politicians TWICE for the same land galled them no end! They were very strident thumpers of the war drum.

Ok, you're americans, and hopefully you know your history.
How important was slavery as a cause of the American Civil war?
It had something to do with the lousianna purchase and the kansas burning stuff.. but I need help!
Could ANYONE lend me a hand?
Ironically, although slavery was a big deal, it was not the original reason for the civil war. Slavery was just a part of it...the main reason was that the South wanted to govern themselves, make their own rules, and have more representation in the federal government. Slavery just happen to be one issue where the South believed they had a right to govern themselves. As the civil war progressed, slavery became a promienent issue. Still to this day, slavery is thought to be the cause or the main reason for the civil war...it was not, it is jus tthe most memorable and the one issue that had the largest impact on our nation.
The Louisanna purchase had littel if anything to do with the slavery or the civil war. The purhcase was nothing more than an expiditionary travel in order to expand the physical size of the USA. The Louisanna purhcase had mor eto do with treaties with the Native American than it did with the South, slavery or the civil war.

lol thanks, but see the essay question was supposed to be more about slavery than the civil war anyway, so i focused on slavery not the war itself.
Very nice write-up trippleblack. As an American History buff myself, I found your posts well done and very accurate. I could find nothing to contradict. Kudos.

OK, so I've added a few things to it. Check my Profile - too many to list here.
Got my mark back today, and keep in mind that I did it the night before it was due and rushed it (I know! I suck), but my mark was...
15/20, which is equivelant to.. an A-
not too shabby
Congrats. If the one you posted was the one you turned in, I read it and I actually learned stuff from it. It is kind of unfortunate really. I learned American history from an Australian. LOL

Its really an amazing story. Politics back then was more serious and locally-based than today - people's primary allegiance was to their home state, and whatever alliance that state belonged to second.
Robert E. Lee always wanted peace - including a peaceful secession - and was offered the top job by BOTH sides. He chose the South becaue that was the choice of his home state of Virginia.
I was up to his old homestead (Arlington) recently for the burial of a Gulf War veteran. The man's home was certainly a beautiful locale.

yeah that was the one I handed in. You know what sucked though, I left it to the last minute liek i do everything, then I couldnt get on ehre to check the info you guys gave me until after I wrote it. So i just handed in that.. at least i didnt get -1/20 like someone else did in my class. (she lost 10% becuase it was late, and her original mark was 1/20.. then minus 10% of 20 or 2 marks, her final result was -1) poor thing.

Thanks, I mean it wasn't an overly great mark, but better than what I thought.. considering the most intelligent girl in my class got 20, and i was being scaled against her.
