Robert E. Lee always wanted peace - including a peaceful secession - and was offered the top job by BOTH sides. He chose the South becaue that was the choice of his home state of Virginia.
I was up to his old homestead (Arlington) recently for the burial of a Gulf War veteran. The man's home was certainly a beautiful locale.
I've been to his house as well. You're right it is a beautiful area. I'm sure it was even nicer 150 years ago. My wife is related to Robert E. Lee. Lee's brother was a judge. My In-Laws still have some of his court documents somewhere. I also built our dining table based on one I found at his house.

OK, so I've added a few things to it. Check my Profile - too many to list here.
tsk tsk tsk, lol, I don't think I've ever gotten anything lower than an 8/20 in english! It was horrible! But its okay, everyone did badly and to think we're an advanced class. (wow.. I just realised I've been in advanced english since year 7, thats almost 5 years.. dang)

Have you learned any yet?
(Just kidding, of course! We are the only civilization that expends quite so much effort teaching our children their own native tongue (well, the Chinese spend a good bit of time on calligraphy, but that's really a different skill).

And with all of that effort, we still have a butchering problem...
"Street slang," "Ebonics," "Redneck speak," "Louisiana Coon A$$ like Farmer Fran," "LEGALESE," "JEB'ese," "Spanglesh," "Wahsingtonian," and so on are great examples.
Even here in the wonderful USA we have silly dialects that should be seperate languages.

I think there's a link between forcing kids to take the same subject every year for 12 years and the resistence to actually learning and using the lessons.
Creation of all the street slang and hiphoprapisms is the creative drive breaking through the years of boredom.
Think about it.

Unions were a necessary evil. Given some of the imaginative abuse flowing from modern corporations, the time seems to be coming around again, after it looked like the Unions might really fade away!
Teacher unions are just some of the more active of the government unions which now form the core of the union movement (far larger and more powerful than the old line UAW and Teamsters).
As for Chalmetians, I'll make a note never to go there.
Er, also, WHY am I making a note never to go there?

It was the "Mos Eisley" of Louisiana. Most of the people there were trashy to the extreme. Ricers ruled the streets. Unemployment thrived there, not due to lack of jobs, but to lack of initiative. The schools were worse than what you'd find in inner city NOLA.
Let's put it this way, Chalmetians make James Carville look like a good product of the state.
Many of the scum have floated across the lake to Slidell post Katrina, polluting our sewer's delicate ecosystem with their waste....

Suprisingly yes, I've studied a few great texts at school. The general idea is poetry, Shakespeare, Novel, Film and heaps more. The main ones I remember were Shakespeare's works. In year 7, we did Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. In year 8, we did Shakespeare's The Merchant Of Venice. In Year 9, we studied Taming of the Shrew and in year 10 we studied Romeo and Juliet. I love english, always have. I remember in year 9, we did foreign film, and our class studied Cinema Paradiso (aka Nuovo Cinema Paradiso) which was awesome! I love being in advanced classes because we don't get treated like stupid kids, I mean from the age of 12, we're taught Shakespeare, and at 14 we study Giuseppe Tornatore, Baz luhrmann and Franco Zeffirelli. I really love being taught a range of texts.

We choose our subjects, from year 9 onwards. From Kindergarten to year 8, the syllabus changes but its compulsory. In year 9 we choose 2 extra subjects to take for the next 2 years (I chose food technology and Information Software Technologies) but we still have to take Geography, History, Mathematics, English, PDHPE and then our electives. (Note: there might be other subjects we have to take, but not sure). Then at the end of year 10, we choose our HSC and preliminary courses. Our only compulsory subject is English. The only condition of our choices is that we have a minimum of 12 units (most subjects are 2 units each), and that 10 of them are board developed (which is made by the board of studies) if we wish to achieve a UAI (University Admission Index- a number out of 100, needed to go to University).
Basically, there are board endorsed and board developed. I'm taking one board endorsed unit, and 11 board developed units. At the end of the 3 terms (30-32 weeks), we can choose to get rid of the nextra units, because we only need 10 in the HSC year. What was I tlaking about?
Oh yeah, there are some good things about taking subjects by force, but then its good to have freedom of choice.
the civil war wasnt due to slavery, it was so the confederate states would rejoin the union. later on in the war the pres. was losing support and so his new focus on the war was to abolish slavery which so many northerners was allready against.

Ah but why did the southern states secede, again?

TripleBlack already covered this in post #11. Its much more noble to say the war was over slavery but dirty politics it what it was about. If you chose to believe the revisionism then go ahead.
Again people seem to think just because you side with the south you must be some kind of prejudice person, this is mainly done to further cloud the real reason for the war.
And Triple is also right on the North’s invasion of the sovereign nation of the confederacy.
They had a Constitutional protected right to break away from the union, but again the Victors write the history books.
Amendment 10 - Powers of the States and People. Ratified 12/15/1791.
“The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.”

Er, I think Trip is the revisionist in this case.
What does Amendment 10 have to do with Secession? Interstate Accords/Commerce, etc., are within the Domain of the Federal Gov't.
