Default Insurance is a Necessary Evil

I'm sure you all know that by now...

I'm 18
I'm single, male
I'd like to be driving a 2000 Mustang GT
I finally got the OK to buy one

Except, the insurance bastards are... well... sexist profiling bastards.

As part of the buying process, I had to find the best insurance I can get. With the required coverage, I was looking at (heart-attack warning)...

4650$ per 6 months

Why? Because I'm 18, single, male...

That is flat out bull****. I'm really sorry if 16-25 year olds like crashing their cars out of sheer ignorance. Actually, I'm not sorry.

So, I look around at my college. What do I see? There are at least 12 freshmen with Mustang GTs. Since they do not have high-paying jobs, I am led to believe mommy+daddy bought it for them. Well, I won't assume that for all of them. Some are leased, and you need collision insurance for that. I hope they are paying the 4650 I was told I had to.

I'm 18 and I'm a junior in college. I'm an engineer. Why do I have to pay more because people my age are total [insert about 50 swears here, then add 1 more for good measure]?

So, I must ask you all...

WHAT THE HELL SHOULD I DO?

I recently posted up a thread on another forum asking everyone their age, car, insurance provider, coverage, and cost. Most of them had old trucks, and I could understand the low cost. Two of them had sports cars, with collision, and they were 16. They pay less than HALF of what I pay for comprehensive on my current sorta-POS Mustang.

Nobody ever said life is fair, but I'm getting SO infuriated over this that I really want to go smash something. I've busted my ass to get this far, all I want is a little something to show for it, and I can't even have that.

Insurance is a Necessary Evil

i know exactly what you mean. I too am 18 going on 19, male and single. My insurance rates are nuts. So i have been trying to figure out how to get by them. i mean, i can deal with paying 4 bucks a gallon for gas on a mustang gt that gets 15 mpg cause my truck right now gets 13 mpg if i am lucky. but the insurance on a mustang GT, in addition to the price of buying it, in addition to the high, no wait, ridiculous cost of gas is too much for a guy making little of minimum wage. So i have come up with an idea to save some money.

I am going to purchase my Mustang. I have been saving for over 1 year now. I have come up with a good sized chunk of change. With the amount of money i have (bout 1/2 cost of a brand new GT) i took 4,000 dollars of it and put it into a high interest CD account with the bank to generate some more money. I also am going to be getting a raise at my job soon, so that is more money in my savings account.

With the purchase of the car, i won't have to insurance that the dealer says, i am going to have insurance that i can afford, and feel comfortable with.

Also, insurance on a GT is a good sized portion larger than on a V6. So, i know, i wanted to get a GT, but with the higher inital cost of purchase, higher insurance, and worse gas mileage i have decided to get the V6. But i am going to get a Vert. So the fact that i didn't get a GT with subside since a Vert, no matter what car it is, is very nice. so mustang, plus Vert, equals very nice car, reguardless of the engine size.

Ford made the V6 for a reason, they know not everyone can afford to get the GT like they would like, so the V6 is only .6 liters smaller. So long as i have a bigger engine than my girlfriend and mother, i will be happy :-D

I feel your pain bro. I'm 19 with a 2005 V6 stang. I have no accidents just 3 speeding tickets and I pay 400 bucks a month...Thats a V6. There are so many bad drivers where I live I can understang why its so high. My friend moved to my town from someplace else and his premium went up 1200 bucks. I don't have discount insurance because I live in MA which is even worse. I'm feelin your pain man. Makes me sick handing over that cash.

I live in Northeast Connecticut. CT makes it's slaves (yes, slaves) have higher insurance coverage. I'm not competing- I know MA slaughters with insurance rates too. Maybe worse..

I just did a comparison, and the V6 Mustang insurance for me costs 40$ less a month. That's not much. Not much at all.

I'm going to call my insurance agent tomorrow and have a nice lengthy discussion. It's not like I'll get anything changed... I just want to hear how the company justifies profiling. I'm not racist, but I'll use this as a comparison to get my point across:

Insurance agencies ask you for your:
AGE
GENDER
Those two pieces of info impact your rate drastically.

Hmm, well, if they are going to track operator accidents based on those two filters, why not try:
RACE (Sexist vs Racial? Difference? I think not)
CELL PHONE USAGE (verified with wireless provider)
IQ TEST (idiots pay more)
NUMBER OF KIDS (soccer moms pass me on the highway at over 80 mph)
Why not?

I completely agree with you man. I wish it were that simple. IQ is my favorite though, how can you go wrong with that?

I asked the dealer about getting a GT and he said forget it. I asked him why and he said the insurance would be completely outrageous and I shouldn't even consider. Oh well, can't fight city hall I guess. They made that famous saying for a reason and its true. We will continue to get ripped off by this scam as long as people are driving cars. I love my car but I would rather a GT in my possesion. I actually pay more for the insurance than the car itself. You can tell somesthings wrong just by that!

GEICO wants 277$ a month from me with collision. That's the lowest I could find.

The only way around this is getting a personal loan (11% interest), paying off the Mustang up front, and only putting liability insurance on it until the loan is paid off- THEN going for collision.

I want collision insurance before winter. Ehhhhhh. That means I need to pay off the loan by then. Well, I did get promoted with a nice hefty raise, so maybe I can do it.

I don't know about where you guys are, but I do know that in MO, your credit rating also effects your rates. So just a little heads up on that too.

Being married makes a diffrence. They figure your not going to do somthing stupid with a wife and kid at home. Compared to a 23 year old single guy trying to impress the chicks.

I hate to sound like the old man here, but here is some advice.
Get what you can afford right now and take that extra money and save it or invest it. You can get a GT in a few years and your insurance will be cheaper. All you are doing now is throwing good money down a rat hole. In a couple of years you should be able to buy a used GT for cash and then all you will need is liability and PIP insurance. Dont waste your money, you sound like a smart young man, think about it.

In simple terms; insurance companies profile. Yep, that nasty word that provokes heated debates, but its the truth.

This is one of the few times I am glad I am older, just turned 30 a few weeks ago.

I currently pay $75/mo for full coverage(Comp & Collision) on my V6 w/$500 deductibles. I priced out coverage for the GT I am getting in 1-2 months and found it would be $125/month with $250 deductibles and keeping liability on the V6.

The county I live in has the highest rates in the state. If I lived 5 miles outside SA, my insurance would be 1/2 my cost.

Forgot to mention, I'm also with GEICO.

i'm 16 , and i bet you can guess i have similar problems. lol. but, i found a loop. they charge that much if you're the primary driver of the vehicle, so, so i didnt have to be the primary driver of that vehicle, i went and bought an old 500 dollar truck. my insurance went down by $2,000.
