I will have to bring my camper and my stang unless you guys wouldn't frown on me for just bringing my truck to tow the camper. I guess it's about a 2 1/2 hour drive for me and I won't want to drive back. I'll just camp the weekend. Be o.k. if I didn't drive 2 cars just to bring the stang? I don't want a trailer hitch on the back of the GT.

Check out the link to the Park. They have a large and well-equipped (and beautiful setting) RV and Campground inside the park. You can reserve space on line, etc. Its a GREAT alternative!

And for those thinking its a long drive for just a day event...

There are fantastic things to do here that would justify a 3 day weekend. The Atlanta aquarium is a must see - I know it blew my mind. The park offers a combo deal on tickets that includes bus shuttles. If you're into baseball, Braves tickets are easy to come by, and we have lots of other events around Atlanta (the RenFest is going on right now). Car shows and cruizes (some quite large) occur EVERY weekend - the one up in Canton is huge (over 500 cars usually), if that's your thing.

A lot depends on how many folks come and how long they want to stay.

I have the idea that setting up the centerpiece picnic leaves a lot of flexibililty for adding things as they become apparent.

The RV/Campground is a great option.

Anyone with comments, questions or suggestions they don't want to post in this thread are encouraged to contact me via PM.

Bringing the Mustang is optional, of course.

Good. If it's any consolation, my truck is a Ford.

Default Routes

I'll assist anyone who is new to the travel game. Just PM me with your questions, and I'll do what I can.

I haven't mentioned the more Southerly routes, mainly because most of the folks down in Florida already know more about traveling to and through Georgia from that direction than I do.

I've always considered south Georgia rather uninteresting (the Southern equivilant of flyover country - you can thank General Sherman for that), so I'm sorry if I have no wondrous spots to point to as must see destinations. For those in the Florida panhandle or coming in from Alabama, I'd recommend you check out Callaway Gardens at Callaway Gardens | Home . Their butterfly center is simply amazing, and the 14,000 acres of gardens are some of the most extensive in the world.

Also located near there is the Little White House at Warm Springs - the hot springs where FDR spent the last years of his life.

Georgia State Parks - Roosevelt's Little White House Historic Site

Its VERY intersting for the history buff, and well worth a pause on the trip to Stone Mountain.

Its wild. Really wild.

Guys, I live about 1 hour from Deal's Gap and Cherohala Skyway, and the BR PArkway is 10 mins from my house. I'd be MORE than happy to help with the organization...PM me, and I'll be glad to do what I can!

-Cheers

Thanks! As we get more people coming from that quadrant, I'll call on your for advice in helping lay out the routes.

Does this also mean you'll come yourself?

We're eating barbeque....

I'd love to come, and I've been thinking of a getaway weekend for a while.Keep us posted on the dates,my wife and I both will need advance notice to work out our schedules. You may want to rethink BBQ for everybody, you could end up overloading yourself!!-You can count on me to bring my little tabletop grille and provisions for us.I'm sure my son (Cobra99) will want to come too.Heck, might even make it a week's vacation-It's been a while since we've been to Callaway Gardens too,we used to go there pretty regular....

I won't cook the BBQ - I'd buy it from a local joing and transport it and heat it up. And I WOULD need some money in the kitty for the food, no doubt, for any who want to go that route!

But bring your own resources by all means - the Park has metal charcoal grills (assuming they haven't rusted away), but I don't trust those.

Callaway is right next to Warm Springs, so if nothing else mix it up with a visit to the old FDR spa. Its worth an extra hour or two.

I'm seeking guidance on dates, but right now its looking like we're black out the 4th of July weekend and the weekend of July 29. Its early in the process, but we seem to have about 6 families/ individuals commited so far, with a number of maybes. My initial thought is we might get as many as 50 folks coming, and perhaps a good deal more.

OK, Iceman, you're on my list. I'll notify everyone as it all gels. Right now, I've eliminated the weekend of the 4th of July because the Park and Roads will be just SLAMMED then (and everyone has conflicts).

July 29 is also out.

Otherwise, its still pretty open, and I spoke with my niece about getting some hotels lined up that will give us a discount - but we need to give her dates, so that is still pending.

I'll be letting everyone know each other's contact info who are coming from the same direction so that they can plan to meet up or convoy, at their option. I'll be the central contact for this:

Stan Bruns
stbruns2@earthlink.net
770-587-4572 (leave messages, please)

More later!

A lot depends on what the group wants. Obviously you are voting for a Sunday, and that's a valid option.

Most of the time, events like this work best for those who take off Friday, and use that day to do the road trip part... Stop for the night somewhere in a hotel or campground... And then caravan to the Park Saturday morning, arriving that morning before noon (etc).

Enjoy the picnic, see the sights and cars, and watch the laser show that night...

Spend the night in a hotel or campground...

Drive home on Sunday.

But it could work just as well taking off a Monday instead of a Friday (and the traffic is often less on Mondays than Fridays).

I'm flexible. It will end up being the will of the people.

I should've been more clear when I signed up..... we are leaving July 6th for Cape Hatteras and won't be home until the 15th, other than that I'm free and clear and looking forward to it.
