Check out all the stuff that is there - its an amazing facility, and open 7 days a Week from 10am to 8pm during the spring, summer and early fall months. It costs $8 per vehicle to enter the park, and then most of the attractions have a ticket charge that is pretty reasonable (I recommend the “All Attractions” pass, which costs $24 for adults, or $19 for kids).
This is NOT a 6 Flags zoo - it’s a classy and beautiful old State Park with some amazing sights and lots of natural beauty.
My suggestion would be that we meet at the Triangle public picnic area, where our early arrival staff (probably me and some local friends) would stake out 6 picnic tables for our group. This is free, by the way, and the picnic area is really very nice and close to lots of the Attractions (actual full size train that travels around the park - skylifts that go to the top of Stone Mountain [amazing views, and unique environments] - a small but interesting antique car museum - and about 100 over things to do and see. (There’s a free laser light show that uses the side of the mountain and gigantic speakers that happens every night at 9:30). If you can stay that late, the laser show is worth the trip all by itself.
Since I like to eat (immediately noticeable by all who see me), the picnic WILL feature some good grill food.
I propose we do a little show and shine of the cars, then we can also cruise around the park’s beautifully landscaped and paved perimeter roads, though the speed limits are low and RIGIDLY enforced by their own cops. Hey, it’s a Cruize, right?
Dates, times and plans all await the process - first, lets see how many are even interested in coming, and then we’ll see what we’ll see. I’d like to hold it sooner rather than later - but its up to the group.
OK, give me the input - what dates (I recommend a Saturday) are good for all of you?

Man that sounds like a great idea. Right now I can't commit to it for various personal reasons, but I'd love to see it happen. This site has been around for 5-6 years now and events like this have not happened before. We've now got just under 31,000 members, 3500 or so are active on the site. I'm sure there's enough people to create a decent interest.

Blue, I will PERSONLLY grill you a big steak if you come! My treat.
Hey, I know you're still new on that fantastic job, so I can see where it might be tough.
Still, a good event like this might also give you the push to slap those bushings in that horse and get it out on the highway!
It occurs to me that, other than locals like myself, the majority of you will be driving in from North of here.
Let me tell you, roads like the Dragons Tail - the CHerohala Skyway - and the Blue Ridge Parkway - are amazing. If you've never driven any of these, you are in for an absolute treat!
I'll be happy to coordinate for the group on this project - act as touchstone and information source - and I've got lots of data on the various routes.
I'd suggest that as we get our group together, those that are located near one another plan on convoys to arrive at Stone Mountain. Its more fun that way, and always a treat to travel with other Mustangs!
The Tail of the Dragon at Deals Gap, with 318 curves in 11 miles...."
It runs right along the peaks of the Appalachians - most places, you're in or above the clouds. FANTASTIC drive during the Summer - daytime temps in the mid-70's (even when its 90 down in the valleys).
It was the first road trip I took after buying my 02 vert.
Best vacation I ever had.
You WILL be welcome if you come. I guarantee it. BUT I didn't start this to compete with you guys - I just know most (99%) here in the East won't make it that far for your West Coast AFM shindig.
Its unlikely we'll end up selecting the same date, anyway.
Blue, if you come you should take the Blue Ridge Parkway all the way down:
naw man, i wasnt worried about competition, hell i think id be cool if we could set up meets all across the US, that would be awesome. im just saying i love driving up in the mountains, and those links you posted are just awesome. we have some local mountains out here that i like to drive thru, but they arent nearly long enough of twisty enough for me.

Year One and Road Atlanta are near Stone Mountain. This time a year they have test and tune sessions most weekends, sponsored by Year One. Panoz is here, too, and will give private tours to large groups if we arrange it in advance.
I'm more of a road race fan myself. I spent the equivilant of a blower install on my car's suspension, wheels and tires.
AFM'ers coming to the Atlanta area from the West might consider taking in some of the covered bridges (some still in use!) in Alabama. My old Mustang club did a tour of these last Fall that was lots of fun.
I'm in. I can't do it in the beginning of July(heading to Cape Hatteras) but other than that, I'm in. The wife saw something on Stone Mountain and has been wanting to go, this is the perfect excuse.
Let me know when..........
By the way, you may want to warn everyone about the Dragon's Tail. It is always over run by bikes. 2 weeks ago they had a Ferrari cruise there, it was pretty awesome.
Man what a time to have a personal life that teeters on ridiculous. I'd absolutely love to make this event.

I'm in! That is if I can get a radiator support replaced, new radiator, new top, int and paint by then......ha! ....and I dont even have it at my shop yet. I MUST go get it next week and guess where it is being stored.....Dogwood City!
Back when my kids were young (gheeze), we would park on the side of the mountain at the head of the easy trail. But we would get on the train, ride it completely around the mountain and stay on it until it got to the incline. We would then ride the incline up the mountain and hike down the mountain on the easy trail and then we would be back at the car. Basicly, we got to do everything without hiking up the mountain.
My son's Scout Troop made Stone Mountain their winter campout in Dec. We would camp on the back side and hike up and down the back side. The campsites were nice, but dont camp too close to the creek during a t-storm!
Do they still have the paddle boats at the lake?
For those of you who have never seen Stone Mountain, you are in for a treat! Basicly, it is just the tip of the iceberg. I understand it covers over 2/3 of Georgia underground. Just dont take it for granite......
I believe all those things you used to do are still available, though the details are all on the site I posted.
LOTS of new things, too.
Do you have any Saturdays when you definintely cannot come?
I'm starting a calendar and posting the "no" dates for all the members planning to attend.
Pass the word to all your friends on AFM. I know everyone doesn't hang out in the Lounge - and it would be against the rules to repeat all the info in all the various forums!

I'll talk to the other moderators and see what we can do about an exemption to that rule for posting events such as this.

OK, but with as many updates as I'm coming up with, keeping it on the front page will be easy for me.
I just decided to call my neice (exec. with a big hotel chain) to discuss setting up discounted hotel rates for those wishing to attend. I'll post the details when I get them.
Food has been mentioned. In fact, I intend to mention it often (shoot, I just made myself hungry). If we get more than just a few folks coming, I think planning the menu could be fun. I personally love BBQ (only the best, of course) at outdoor picnics. I'd be willing to bring my portable gas grill and pick up the group's bbq order at the best bbq place in Georgia (nearby my house and no, I'm not mentioning it here, else every dang mustang owner in the state would mob the place and ruin my easy access to pig meat).
Frankly, their barbequed beef brisket is the best I've ever seen.
But we can also do the hamburger, steak and hotdog thing, too. Might need some extra grills, but we will have at least 6 tables (seats 6 to a table), plus assorted folding chairs and such.
Famine and starvation is NOT an option!
