The driver and his passengers in this Mustang were injured in a one-car crash in Echo Lake Park.
The four young men injured in a car wreck at a Union County park Wednesday were speeding -- but not drag racing as authorities initially suspected, investigators said today.
Alexander Jackson, 18, of Cranford was driving the orange 1994 Ford Mustang that slammed into a concrete bridge in Echo Lake Park around 9 p.m. Wednesday and suffered severe head injuries, police said.
Jackson, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was listed in critical but stable condition in the intensive care unit of University Hospital in Newark, according to Officer Joseph Nordstrom, a member of the Union County Police Accident Reconstruction Investigation team.
He said the front seat passenger, Matthew Nigro, 20, of of Clark was also not wearing a seat belt and was still in Unversity Hospital in stable condition with a leg fracture.
Summonses were issued to both men for not wearing their seat belts, Nordstrom said. Jackson was additionally charged with careless driving, police said.
Michael Mankowsky, 21, of Garwood and Ian Romanello, 18, of Roosevelt Boulevard I Edison were rear seat passengers. Nordstrom said Mankowsky suffered internal injuries and remained in University Hospital in stable condition.Romanello was taken to Overlook Hospital, where he was treated and released, he said.

They got off easy! All it would have taken is for one of those kids to have gotten killed and that driver would be looking at a severly life-altering lapse in judgement rather than just the loss of a car and, hopefully, what turns out to be a short stay in the ICU.
Hopefully all of these kids have learned something. Sadly, the fact is that they probably are now convinced that they are indestructible!

it worse on me since i now live in Florida and cant see how he's doing.

These are the first posts ever on AFM for both Jerz and njgirl. How did either of them even know that JudisStang posted this thread on AFM? Did they each google the New Jersey crash of a Mustang?

nope i was looking up the accident on google to see if they had a pic of his car cuz i hadnt seen it and this popped up.
Judi - I think this may be a different accident than the one in question based on the date, Lat/Long coordinates, and the fact that the department is Denville. This is actually right up the road (by about a mile!) from the last place we lived in Jersey!
