Question 1990 Mustang convertible top problem

my convert top in my 90 stallion no longer works....i was told it worked intermittently when i got it(haha) my switch and relays and motor test fine on bench tests, it is a 2 relay system and if i wire the relays in 1 at a time i can make it go up or down, if you wire it the way ford wants it it does not work...i have done voltage checks and ground checks and ohms tests and everthing is working....wire in the relays together and it does not work....this is the oddest problem i have run into on a mustang....i have compared several wiring diagrams including mitchell mechanical online and they all have the same color coding and my color coding is right.....any suggestion or advice would be greatly appreciated

I had the same problem with my 90. It turned out that the motor needed to be replaced. When you bench test it, it does not have to push the pressure of the fluid that makes the cylinders move the top. Once you put it back in and that load is one it, it isnt strong enough to move it. You probably just hear a click from the relay (I am guessing). I had the motor "re-furbished", it worked for about a week and then nothing. I ended up replacing that and the lines (i had a small leak) and have been lucky with no problems since.

Good luck.

Snowman I might be posting this wrong or wrong place but maybe you could help seeing you have a Fox Conv. I replaced all my weather stripping and the front post did not look right and just wont fit right. gap at top corner of window worse than before. Will a shop manuel show me how it supost to fit if so I will try to buy one. Been trying to work on this for two week even trying to adjust windows. I have just about had it. And can not find anyone in the Port Richey, Fl. area to help. Thanks sorry if I am not posting this right. Bill dpullara1@msn
