Default 1994 Mustang shifts to neutral while in drive

When I am driving my mustang after about eight miles the rpms will suddenly start to rap up, acting like its in neutral although i am still in drive. I have to shift into neutral and back into drive in order to continue driving. Any ideas why it is doing this?

When was the last time your transmission fluid was changed? It may be as simple as that... or not. But it can't hurt to start there. Mine was giving me similar problems and it was just that the fluid needed to be changed. Once it was, bingo, no more problem.

I had just gotten the transmission filter and fluid changed, about a week ago and it still does it. Any other suggestions?

Did the tranny do this before you had it serviced? If not, take it back and have them recheck the fluid level or you can do it yourself if you know how. If the fluid level is OK I would have them recheck the filter to make sure it is the correct one and mounted correctly. If the tranny was acting up before you had it serviced it sounds like the pump is about to crater. Wish you luck!

I agree, take it back and have it checked. Hopefully a band isn't burnt but it sounds like it's slipping.
