need help finding what piston size i sould use

my engine teacher said to find out what pistons i need i should measure the taper of the bore, double it and add .004. does this mean measuring the ring ridge to the bottom of the cyl wall. can somebody help me understand this. thank you

What that means is using a taper bore gauge, you measure it horizontally and vertically at the top of the bore, the middle of the bore, then the bottom of the bore.
