Default 2000 Mustang electrical help

Hello,

I have a 2000 Mustang convertible with electrical problems.
Today, I started the Mustang and and found that the battery clicked for a second and then suddenly started. I thought it might have been the connection on the battery terminals or something of that sort, so I went to the store anyway. After getting out of the store, I tried starting my car again and heard a click......and that was all. The car no longer started and the battery was dead. I got a jump start, let the battery charge but, going home, the car was acting weird. Once I put the gear in fourth the sterio turned off and all of the gauges on the dashboard moved right and then back to their original positions.
Home was right around the corner so, after getting there, I turned the car off and tried to restart. Nothing.
I then began to hear a clicking sound below the dashboard-around where the fuses are located. Could it be serious? What do I do now?
Also, I don't know if this is related or not, but a few days ago I ran over a rock. No cracked oil pan as a result but it did disconnect a cable which I noticed was connected to the catalytic converter. I put it back in place and had no problem.
The terminals are very dirty and I had a similar problem like this before.
A few months ago one of my headlights went out and I heard that clicking sound below the dashboard. I also saw a red light go on below the stering wheel that has some sort of input. What the heck is it?
Please help me find out what is wrong with my car.

You need a new battery. Also get your alternator checked.

you need an alternator and a battery, because your battery is not holding a charge, and it wouldnt hurt to check your fuses either

Thanks guys.
Parden my ignorance-as I know nothing of car repair. However, someone once told me that if you disconnect the battery while the car is on-and the car remains on-that would tell you if your alternator is still good. Is this true? I tried doing this and the car stayed on.
