Default question about fuel line plumbing

hey im redoing a 68 with a 302. among other performance parts I bought a holley 80 gph mechanical fuel pump, withought really knowing anything about how it would make the engine run under normal operating circumstances. i've still not plumbed it all in yet but I was wondering if I need any aditional hardware like fuel pressure regulators or anything on the line between the pump and carb. im running a edelbrock 600 cfm carb, if that makes anydifference. also how will this affect the behavor of the engine .

A good quality small fuel filter should be installed between the pump and carb. Try to keep the use of hose to a minimum, use tubing no smaller than 3/8 inch diameter, (no copper tubing), and isolate the line from direct contact with anything that gets hot. If you need to use clamps, get the ones that have some sort of insulation on them. For example the metal type clamps that have a rubber insert to hold the fuel line. You will need these especially if mounting the clamps to the engine. Also avoid having the fuel line contact the heater hoses where they extend from the engine to the firewall.

Your mechanical fuel pump does not need a pressure regulator. The pressure is already preset for a pressure of between 7 and 8 PSI. The pump's 80 GPH output should be enough for a stock or mild performance engine.

The 600 CFM carb is about as big as you will want to go. If you were to go bigger, you have the possibility of loosing the needed torque at lower RPMs. You'll be wasting gas and the engine will be sluggish for street use. Most mildly built 302s are using the 600 CFM with good results.
