Default Max tire width on rims

Hey fellas,

My 69 mach I is equipped with some 14" magnum 500 rims. I would like to know the maximum tire width I could get for them (not sure how wide the rims are, but the BFG T/A Radials on them now are P225/60R14). I work up at a Valvoline Instant Oil Change and changed the oil on a dodge viper last week that had 335s on it (Gawd, they were like 15 inches wide... drool.) Not to say that I like dodges, but Carroll Shelby did have a huge hand in creating it, so it has to be respected... (off topic).

Thanks a bunch for the tire help, guys.

Measure your rim and find out how wide it is. Then convert the inches to metric and that's how wide your tire should be. Stick with the 225 if it works. Going too wide of a tire on a narrow rim will cause you to have less traction than a narrorer tire on the correct rim.

Is there any way I can read my rim's width without first removing the tire?

some magnum 500's have the width cast on the inside of the rim, near where the weights would be. I had a set of 255/6015 on a 15x8 crager superlite on the back of my 66 and they looked great. But your lucky...you have more room under the rear of your mach 1. I have Mickey thompson etdrags on the rear now 28x9 and they fit well but stick out about a half inch or so.

If my rims are, say, 14x7s, can I put any tire on there with a tread width bigger than 7 inches? (Also, If I put larger diameter tires on my car, will I have to have the speedo recalibrated? cost?)
