Default Transmission Reverse Gear Gone

Here's what happened dudes. I was working on my 90 T-Bird yesterday. No drivetrain work just repairing some damage from an accident.

I backed the car out of the garage fine but when I wanted to put it back in, I had no reverse gear. My bro brake loaded it for about 5 seconds in drive and all was fine but no reverse gear and neutral is now a drive gear.

I thought the reverse band may have gone but the oil is clean and no problems before this. The neutral drive thing is freaky.

I tried playing with the linkage and adjusting it as it is supposed to be adjusted with no luck.

Any ideas? One of the possibilities suggested in the manual is ECM?????

Sounds like a linkage problem to me ! Keep playing with it.

Check out this T-Bird site with Transmission tips..... They are great !

Thanks Anthony (do you prefer Tony?). I am an established member of TCCOA and have posted my problem.

I also have talked to my Ford dealer and one of my buddies runs a transmission rebuilder outlet and the news is bad. They all feel my reverse and a forward clutch pack have fused together causing the problem. Means a rebuild is in order. As I was flipping through those articles you posted, I realized that their are many weaknesses in the early AOD that would need to be addressed during the build.

I already have ported Intakes, 1.8 rr's, coated headers, exhaust, phenolics, underdrives, K&N, modified TB, deep B&M pan and cooler to go in it or already on it and it will also get ported heads with larger valves and a cam along with 3.73's or 4.10's so I will need to beef up the tranny.

I plan on doing the wide ratio 4R70W gear swap and the newer smaller 11 inch converter for added rpm capability.
