Question Is this safe?

Is it safe to siphon tranny fluid through the dipstick? I have an AOD tranny with 160,000 on it and changed the fluid in the pan/filter last year but the fluid is still very dark. I don't want to drop that pan again but i'm worried that not enough fluid was changed. Any opinions?

Siphoning out the tranny fluid thru the dipstick will not hurt your stang. I would still drop the pan to make sure all of the fluid is out, clean any residue and crap that may have built up on it and pop in a new filter. Its cheap insurance compared to the cost of rebuilding a tranny. I do it to to my 92 once a year. Its an excellent idea to change the fluid once a year, dropping the pan and changing the filter, is just a little better.

I dropped the pan last year and changed the filter/fluid and cleaned the pan, stipped a bolt, changed a gasket, lol, all that good stuff. The tranny is still running stong and I'm putting new rear gears in it soon so I just don't want to hurt it. Is there any way to get most of it, cause i know a lot is in the torque converter? One more thing, what fluid would u recommend?

How do i drain the torque converter too, or is that what you were asking?? Will it hurt to mix mobil with the other kind i have in there now, since i won't get all of it? And do i have to add an additive to keep the deposits from coming loose, i heard something like that?

Good questions. I'm pretty sure mixing synthetic with what you have now won't hurt but I would drop the pan or syhon to drain out as much as I could first. With regard to getting all of the fluid out of the torque converter, don't think there's an easy way to do this. Hopefully Tony can better answer this. I do not not add additives to synthetics. I think its a waste of money since quality synthetic fluids like Mobil 1 synthetics have all of the additives needed. Running synthetics you are already so much farther ahead than using regiular transmission fluid.

Hope this is of some help and like you, I'll be looking forward to Tony's response about draining the torque converter

I know this is an old post, but here in town the quick lube ( I only use them for transmission) hooks to the transmission cooling lines and pump new fluid in until the fluid is clear. They will let you watch and you tell them if its the way you want it to look. It get all the fluid in the valve body and converter removed. Cost (with what they call Synthetic is 4 parts reg and 1 part synthetic ) any way the cost was $120.00 I know that high but my aod ran 10 times better until the TV cable came off while I was driven down the road.
