I have a short in my car someplace, and my tuner is not getting verifed by my software. I have cleaned the contacts, and tried different computers. Also tried both GUI and shiftmaster newest software. My battery is almost immediately dying when I hook the cable to the tuner to do mods with the key on. How could I test the tuner to see if it is ok? It worked fine last summer, and now that I have it out of storage it is acting up. I took it out of the car and checked everything. The fuel pump is not continuously running or anything. I really need to get this working, I am installing a vortech and need it desperately!

First, find another car to test it. If it fails, its the tunner.

Tuners can fail, rarely but they do, send it to Shiftmaster. I wouldn't mess with it.
