Default Help with 'Stang Headers and 351C

I'm going to try a post here because, well its Mustang related?

When I picked out a set of headers, I got a set for a Mustang instead of the F-100 because its a 351-C 2bbl. I found a nice set of Hedmans, slightly used, for a 351-C 2bbl that actually came out of a Mustang. I know Hedman is not top shelf, but this truck is developing a need for an exhaust system, and unfortunately, there is no such thing. And I sure don't want to get into an ongoing debate with some know-nothing parts store "boy" kid who will insist on telling this lady there is "nothing we can do."

I figured I'd start with the manifolds and work back. Since the headers came off a 'Stang with the very same motor, I'm assuming the starter clearence is not going to be an issue. These are the regular length headers (not shorties). But now I have a real dumb question...

Ummm, that ends the Mustang 351 piece of the truck, but what about the cab and 8' bed? I'm really kind of puzzled here because I don't really know how to set up the rest of the exhaust system to fit the rest of the F-100 . I'm guessing the F-100 system probably won't bolt to Mustang power. The stock exhaust would be single, and built for a 360 2bbl, but I want duals anyhow. And the duals for a 360-2V fit into a different set of Hedmans. So I am stuck on what to do next.

I can do without "sound" effects, because this is a daily driver and I get headaches already, and I will also be doing some interstate travel and hauling, and towing as well. I don't want to be bait for the Smokies either. But I want the pipes and mufflers to be wide enough to give me as much extra horses as I can get without running into backflow problems. I don't have a "cash" hose where the stuff keeps pouring out from, but I do want to do it right the first time. I also would like to enjoy some of that 'Stang hot rod performance, but also be able to have this vehicle act like a real truck when it needs to.

So if you all will be kind enough, please give me some suggestions for a workable system such as pipe size, reducers, quieter mufflers, and how far back I should run this thing...its got a long way to go too! And also how to go about doing it. They had to put two driveshafts on the thing to get back to the pumpkin! I mean its way way way back there!

thanx a lot

the problem is that in a truck, the engine sits higher, so she is right, there is nothing that you can do short ov searching for headers that will work or having them custom made

Maybe I'm mixed up.

I have the headers...I got them used. I was wondering what I need to hook up to them after I put them on. It was just a "hypothetical conversation" I could picture having with the parts store kid.

But you are right again, after crawling under there a few minutes ago, it does look a little tall. What do you think might gum the works when I try to bolt them up?

I had a 67 F250 with a 428, the only thing that I got to work was a set of '63 406 tri-power manifolds

Kaylah,
See if anyone sells shorties for the motor. That way, you will not need to worry about clearing fram or floor and then just have a shop make a dual exhaust setup from the headers back.

I still havn't tried the pony headers yet, I have some brakes to install and the power steering to fix. I might reluctantly re-sell those headers and opt for the shorties. But I hate to get rid of something I haven't even tried yet...guess I still have time to ponder. Thanks for the tips.
