Default exhaust sounds??

I am trying to decide what cat back exhaust to put on my 89 GT 5.0. There is a very good test on all kinds of exhaust on the website right now so what I'm concerned with, right now, is the sound. I like the flowmaster sound but I don't want to be like every other mustang out there. Is there a site or any other way to hear the different exhausts?

I don't know of any site that has the sounds. One way would be to ask people what exhaust they have on their mustang when you hear it. I have done this.

Default exhaust sound....

The only site I have found is Stangnet.com. Go to the Audio, Video section.I believe they have a Cobra w/ flowmaster's if you can play it on your computer. Also, the only other mufflers I have heard that even come close to the awesome sound of flowmaster is the Hooker Aero Chambers, but I always and will always recomend flowmaster

go with "MAC" exhaust i had them on my 89 lx when i first bought the car then one of the mufflers cracked where the weld is so i went to "flowmaster" not a good decision they did sound good but i did not like them as much as mac exhaust .... if you ever saw "gone in 60 seconds" the g.t. 500 mustang well on my 89 i had a cam and mac exhaust and i swear it sounded just like "eleanor" in that movie so if you like the sound of "eleanor" then get yourself a e303 cam and a mac cat back exhaust ... you will be different and you will sound better then everybody else ..and now i cant wait to get the mac put back on the car .... buy mac , buy mac , buy mac, buy mac exhaust...............

If you want Volume, replace your cats with an offroad h-pipe or x-pipe. For OHV engines, I've used a catless h-pipe with Ultra-Flow Dynomax & also a Borla catback. Deep tone & the catless h-pipe does wonders for breathing. Check your local/state laws before trotting around illegally, but folks will always know your coming or going if you want them to, sometimes if you didn't. No high pitch Flowmaster sound with that setup.

Default exhaust sounds

my mustand had a catless custom xpipe on it with flomasters and it sounded pretty good. i just recently put on the mac 1 5/8 equal length headers and it sounds a lot better. it has a deep tone at an idle and a strong bark when you get on it. the best part is there is hardly a hint of the dreaded drone crusing around town or the highway.

Hey, mshay79!

I have seen "Gone in 60 seconds"and love the sound of Eleanor! You stated your '89 LX with a e303 cam and a mac cat back exhaust sounds like Eleanor. Are we talking the rumble, the crackle, and the fender shaking, too?

I desire a Mustang that rumbles and shakes the fenders like Eleanor of "Gone in 60 Seconds" fame. Would an E cam do the job? I was planning to run a X cam and ruin my torque just for the sound. Any opions out there? How big of a cam do I need to sound like a Eleanor? Factory cam with 1.7 rockers? B, E, F, X, or Z cam?

I believe the sound you're looking for is long tube headers, straight pipes, and resonators bolted to a 351. I could be wrong but i think the 500's and the 500KR's were this set up. Of course you know a lot of sounds were edited in.. it wont ever sound the same...

Hey, Vortex!

Eleanor was a movie prop, a fake, wannabe GT500. But a beautiful car none the less! Easy on the eyes and she sounded great, even if it was courtesy of sound editing. My Bandit Trans Am never sounded like the radical cam in the movie Smokey and the Bandit. I am really looking to create "the sound" on a low budget.

Alternative Automotive made a sound clip I love. Take a listen. Can I create this sound with my 302HO with 1.7 rockers, factory shorties, catless open 2 1/2" H-pipe exhaust? Where can I spend the least money, yet create the most bark for my Mustang?

Bigger cam? How big? B, E, F, or X hydraulic roller cam? Or go with cheaper hydraulic cam/lifter?

2 1/2" pipes? 3" pipes?

Shorties? Or fork over the dough and suffer the installation pain of long tube headers to quench my appetite for a good, evil rumble?

Thanks!

Jamie

Well, for the budget build up... i would have to recomment the E cam. otherwise youd have to change valvetrain or pistons. Unless you can find another with a lopey idle. Long tube headers and 3" tips. This will give you a nice sound. but for louder, also drop in an H-pipe.. Is it a steet car or will you try to get away with no mufflers? that would cause most to go deaf. But like i said the resonators is what would change the sound to the muscle car regime.

What? Did you say something? I can't hear anything except the ringing in my ears and the voices in my head.

Loud and proud. I just wanted to show the sewer piper foreign car crowd how it's done. May the American V8 rumble on!

I am willing to go open pipe, then back-track to resonators, glass packs, turbo mufflers; proportional to the muffler fines and court costs. I foresee MAC long tube headers, Pro Chamber 3" exhaust and an E cam in my future. Now I need to find out how to properly discard the EGR. I understand the sensors need to be hooked up for proper cruising advance. Do I just disassemble EGR, or does plunger need sensor input?

bassani is the best sounding by far......

no other exhausts comeclose to the quality of the system, and the clean rumble it produces, plus it has no midrange highway drone like the flows, and mac kits.

H-pipes for a deep sound

X-pipes for a higher, raspy sound

Flowmasters and MAC sound similar but slightly different

Stay away from resonators and turbo mufflers unless you want that snappy glasspack sound

Bassani is what i have currently with an X-pipe and cats. Plenty loud but not overbearing. I've got a video i can send you but its rather large.

E303 cam is good, cheap street cam, but won't lope like the Eleanor from Gone in 60 Seconds. B303 cam (more duration, good bottom end) would be a better choice or something from the Comp Cams line with at least 280-288 degrees duration. Rockers won't change the duration of the cam, just the lift. Duration is where the sound comes from.

Go with the shorty headers

Ask and you shall receive. You can hear all kinds of different setups on a 5.0 Stang. http://exhaustsoundclips.com/phpbb2/
