Is there an advantage to this and is it legal? I know it is doable. Just an idea I am playing around with.

I've heard a mustang 5.0L that had straight pipes instead of mufflers. It wasn't loud at all. I think whether you would like the sound or not to be the major factor.

I had the straight pipe thing going on but for some strange reason it kinda sounded like a harley.I did noticed a difference when i put the flowmasters back on.Maybe it sounded like a huge truck

you know I wondering about that! I asked a CHP fellow the other day if this was so. he stated that there is no set decibel rating in the state of California. its a law of taste i.e.. if its 3 in the morning 95 db is still pretty loud. he said that the law is that its the discretion of the officer witnessing of whether it is above satisfactory conditions.
id like to see the law if there is one because I hear so many contradicting stories.

No it is not legal in any state ive ever been in. you must have some type of muffler on. you wont get any noticible power out of it other then a headach.

yep, i agree. Mine is getting more annoying than anything really. I dont have aftermarket heads but am getting ready to put on new exhaust from the headers back. I miss my tips.

You don't have to have mufflers (The Neon SRT-4 doesn't have any) you just have to meet a certain decibel requirement at 3,500 rpms, 50ft directly behind your car. A V6 with no mufflers will be obnoxious sounding.

Doesn't the SRT neon have like glasspacks or something of that sort to quiet it down a little? Something without mufflers would just be plain LOUD. I had a SRT fly by me and it didn't sound that loud. Hell, my lawnmower is loud.
I was looking through summit today and i saw those exhaust cutouts. You flip a switch and it converts your exhaust just to strait pipes out of the headers. THats hella tite, how hard would it be to install that? Where would you put it? After the headers? Could you just move all the other things back? THanks

On my '94 GT I used to have pipes welded in place of the mufflers, in Sacramento. My factory h-pipe kept my exhaust well below 95 decibels. I even got away with it for 2 years in MO, when the next inspection came around it failed the visual check, I guess they missed it in the last inspection.
And yes, in CA there is a 95 decibel limit from 5 feet behind your exhaust tip diagonally, at 3500 rpm. My dad has a '72 with Long tubes, 3 inch pipes, and Magnaflow mufflers, he got a fix-it ticket for them and he took it straight to the police station where another officer checked it out, told us it was too loud. Another officer, out of uniform, pulled up, in a Z28. That's when the inspecting officer says "hold on, let's ask him." At this point we thought we were in good shape. He wrote it off Claiming "It's not as loud as my truck."

Too many mods since last E.T.
it's not really worth it, you'll lose too much back pressure which will kill your low end. I think it'd be too loud, mine's wicked loud now with flowmasters and no cats. just my .02
peace
