Default Swapping MASS or computer into Speed Density car.

Ok, here the situation. I got the ECM and MAF with the harness from a 91 DIS 2.3 to convert my bro's 89 to MASS Air.

Am I going to run into problems with the DIS computer on a distributored motor?

Second, I also got a 55 mm MAF from a buddies 5.0 to replace the dismal 42 mm 2.3 unit. So, sensor from the 2.3 in the 5.0's 55 mm or use the complete 55 mm 5.0 unit?

Thats an interesting combination !!!

The answer to all your questions in NOPE, no way Jose.

Heres why, the 2.3 liter EEC although simmilar to that of a V8 is not exactly the same, lacks the drivers for the extra 4 injectors.

Now, the wiring harness can be adapted, but it is a PITA.
You will need to splice several wires and that my friend will be a nightmare. There are also some unused pins in the 2.3 EEC harness.
There are 4 wires that run from the MAF, 2 signals, voltage, and ground. Lets call em ABCD.

PIN A--pins37/57,these are both power from the EEC.
PIN B-- runs the ground and has to be connected to EEC pin 60.
PIN C--this is the MAF signal return,it needs to go to pin #9,this hole will be empty in your Plug at the EEC,add a female wire and pin in the plug.
PIN D--this is the MAF signal,it goes to pin# 50,add a pin in the plug same as above.

Still interested? then keep reading.

The 5.0 EEC has a FPM (fuel pump monitor) at pin # 19,run a wire from pin #19 to the wire going from your fuel pump relay to your fuel pump.

If you are running the EGR stuff ,take the#51 pin out,& reinsert it into the#38 hole.

Want me to go on?

ONe more thing...forget about the MAF, its small and the calibration of the sensor is different than that of a 5.0. will run like crap.

So the best option is to buy a conversion harness and A9L EEC.

Rob,
The ECM and harness I got is from a MASS air 2.3 91 car. The only problem is that the donor car was DIS while the 89 has a distributor.

I am not trying to use a 5.0 ECM, only the MAF meter. The 2.3 meter is only 42 mm while the 5.0 is 55 mm.

Here we go again

The EEC harness???? or just MAF harness???

The 2.3 computer, give it to charity. wont work on a V8, doesnt have the injector drivers needed (lacks 4).
The EEC 2.3 harness can be modified but it is a PITA...again give it to charity.
The 2.3 L MAF, can use for rice exhaust tip.

The 5.0 liter MAF use with its own electronics.
Now..the 2.3 litter MAF WIRING harness can be used.

So rounding up....

5.0 MAF + 2.3 MAF wiring =OK
2.3 ECM= junk
2.3 ECM wiring harness= Junk

Ok I guess I need to clarify LOL.

The engine is a 2.3. The swap involves taking the MASS air ECM and harness from a 91 DIS 2.3 and using it to convert an 89 Speed Density 2.3.

Part 2 is the 5.0 55 mm MAF with the new 2.3 MASS air computer to replace the dismal litlle 42 mm that comes with the 2.3 system as the engine is heavily modded.

Are we clear now?

Hey you need some english lessons !!!

So hes got also a 2.3 !!! why didnt you mention that !!!

No problem at all !!! can be done

Just one note, the larger 5.0 maf will lean the fuel a bit.
Use the stock 2.3 MAF electronics with it.

DAmn..this was tough

Do you think the DIS computer will run the distributor or will I need to run DIS?

Yeah, I just assumed that the reader would naturally assume I was smart enough not to try to use a 2.3 computer on a 5.0 and vice versa. I guess you just think I'm dumb man. LOL. Thanks for the input bro.

The DIS module is separate from the EEC.
So the pinouts on both EECs could be the same or close as only to need a few pinout changes.

Im not 100% sure of this, you need to get 2.3 DIS and NON-DIS diagrams or pinouts to compare.

Let me see if i can find the pinouts.

Rob,
What controls the DIS? I assumed it was part of the ECM.

The DIS and EEC comunicate just the same as the TFI with EEC.

DIS is nothing else but an electronic distributor without points, but the signals back to the EEC are identical in both applications.
What i am not possitive is if the DIS harness is identical in pinout locations...must be..but not sure.
