Default Carburetor sprays up, engine sputters

What happens is when it cranks, the car idles, but every second or so, the carb sprays gas up, then the engine sputters, the vacuum drops, sometimes the engines stalls, sometimes it catches again and keeps running(but still sputtering every second or so) what could be causing the gas to spray up(it is spraying from the jets below the choke plate. Also, the area around the choke plate and inside the two barrells is black. When I try to bring up the revs the engine either revs up the dies or it just dies right away

thanks

Sounds like either a timing issue or maybe you've got a couple of spark plug wires crossed.Don't forget to use the correct firing order- it's not the same as the H.O. order.
If it's an '80 cam,it'll be 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8 ,NOT 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 like the H.O.Try this and check your initial timing.Should be 10 degrees with the vacuum hose to the distributor plugged.And-make sure your vac line goes from the correct port on the carb;on the Edelbrock it's the one on the passenger side.
One final thing, make darn sure you've got no vacuum leaks, like at the big plug on the back of the carb.It should be teflon taped to be airtight.

Let us know how it goes.

does the block have a different order than 1-4 on the passenger and 5-8 on the drivers? when i hooked up in that firing order it won't even start up, it just turns and turns. the block is an e0 out of a truck. there are no vacuum leaks, when it was running with the other firing order i checked with the vacuum guage and the only time the vaccum changed was when the car sputterd and the carb sprayed up.

thanks

SWEET!!!

After i changed the firing order to the 1-5-4..etc.. it wouldnt fire...

but i remembered i messed with the dist so much just to get it to crank before...
so i took it out and reinstalled it to tdc, with the new firing order...car cranks up in like 1/10th of a second and revs GREAT...no sputtering..shoots flames at higher rpm's, but i just have straight headers right now...

thanks a lot man
