Well I recently got a 95 mustang gt and I love the car. I have a quick question though, sort of a concern, not sure if it is a problem or not. I recently had the mass air flow sensor go out and had to get a new one, but thats besides the point. I've the car for about 3-4 weeks now, and when I start it, and then let it idle for a few minutes to get warm, it makes this chirping sound. After a while, it kinda goes away then I drive around and its fine, and then when I go to park the car later and its parked, when it idles, there is no more chirping sound. Is this normal or should I get this looked at before this turns into a problem? From what I know about engines (which is barely _ANYTHING_), the sound seems to be coming from the distributor.. yeah, I think it's the distributor from this picture I got off some other mustang. Any help would be appreciated, the car is an AOD w/ 93k miles. All stock, except the saleen s351 body kit.
Another picture.. I don't have a digital so I can't take a picture of my engine, but it looks pretty much exactly like this, not the first I posted, I just saw it had a supercharger ;\ lol.
Chirping sound?...chimpmunks...whole family of 'em. When you drive around they scat like dogs in a hubcap factory...
Check your serpentine belt in the engine. A belt starts to squeak because it is slipping on the pulleys. This in turn causes the belt to glaze over. Over-tightening the belt to stop the squeak will cause premature failure of the components driven by the belt. I would advise replacing the belt in this situation. Spraying WD-40 or any other anti-squeak is only a short temporary fix that is not recommended. It dries the belt out even worse than before. Once a belt starts squeaking, the only remedy is to replace it.
Thanks for all the replies guys. Where is the serpentine belt though? and where is the harmonic balancer? I will take it into the shop to ask the people to check those parts for me real quick.. can I get rid of the sound without being charged or is it a deep-down problem? The car drives like it always has.. sound or no sound, the sound is just kinda worrying me. After showing the sound to my friend @ work tonight, he said it was more of a squeaking sound, not quite chirping, but I'm not sure, whats the difference? lol. To me, it sounds more like squeak. Any more help would be appreciated, thanks.
After looking up signs of a bad harmonic balancer.. I think this might be it..
Signs of a failed Harmonic Balancer: Leaking from main seal.
Deterioration of the rubber between the hub and the outer ring.
A visible cracking of the balancer hub or in the outer ring.
Any wobble of the balancer or wobble in the drive pulley.
Excessive engine vibration.
Slipping or noisy drive belts, belt damage or accelerated belt wear.
A highly polished spon on the pulley grooves, means a warped balancer.
Elongation of the balancer key-way or wear on the balancer hub or crankshaft.
Failure in the alternator, power steering pump, A/C or water pump.
Engines that don't run properly when adjusting the timing.
Poor engine performance, irregular idle.
Recently, the engine has been kinda shaking, like I will be sitting and I can kinda feel the power because it shakes a bit. And the noisy belts kinda add to it, so it might be that, how much does that run about?
I'm not quite sure if thats the problem yet, it makes sense because I have been reading other threads about harmonic balancers. It only usually shakes when i'm in park or neutral, when i'm not driving, and by the time i'm done driving, the squeak is gone usually. But it all kinda makes sense, with the shaking, squeaking, etc. How can I check the balancer? is it under the car? if so, where at.. towards the front, rear.. thanks.
The balancer is attached to the crankshaft and has a pully on the front side of it, it's at the very bottom of your engine on the front side in the middle. Look for the rubber sticking out, or for spot were it could be rubbing on the waterpump. You can also let the engine run and watch to see if it's wobbeling.
Thanks, I took a look at it today, before and after I went to autozone, it looked fine and the guy said it was fine because my engine would be shaking and wobbling a lot, its not really shaking that bad at all. I told him it was coming from the distributor and he said no, then he listened closely and said yeah, it is. So he told me to take the black cap off and look at the rotor, I will be doing that tonight.. how do the bearings in the distributor work.. do they break alot? thanks.
Squeeky distributor ! Maybe ?? I've never heard of a squeeky rotor before..... They are cheap as, you can just replace it. The distributor also has a gear on the bottom of it which spins the shaft that turns the rotor. Maybe that shaft is squeeking ??? Can you put WD-40 on the distributor ??? I guess so !
My guess is that the squeek is comming from the serpentine belt or the water pump. Harmonic balancer is still an option though. Mine never made a sound, just fell apart when I pulled the crank shaft pulley off one day!
Oh, darkwizard, get yourself a Chiltons or Haynes manual for your car. It will save you a lot of time and money.

haha, yeah, I heard those manuals are awesome! I'm gonna order one asap. Yeah, he said the harmonic balancer is fine, besides, the car doesnt really shake as much as I thought it did, but it just makes that squeak and freaks me out. lol. Ill take a look at it and try to make something of it, lol. alright, thanks for all the replies, keep em comin, your opinion / 2 cents are helping alot. Thanks.
