Default Fuel pump question

Could a fuel pump go bad? I'm asking because last night I heard a loud buzzing sound coming from the side of my gas tank, aside from the usual sound it makes. Is the buzzing sound that comes from the back of the car when you turn it on, the fuel pump?

Yes a fuel pump can go bad.... and yes an electric pump will make a buzzing sound when you first turn it on.

you can take the hose or line off before the carb or fuel injection and turn the engine over a couple of times and see if gas pumps out of the line. If it doesn't, than the fuel pump is bad, if fuel comes out, than it is good.

Default fule pump test

I have used a fuel pressure guage on the shrader valve (located on the fule rail) to test fuel pressure at idle and under excelleration (flip the throttle linkage to rev up) if the pressure drops off more than say 5psi better replace that fuel pump. The buzzing sound alone does not mean the pump is bad.

Okay, I think my fuel pump just went south. When I turn the ignition, it doesn't make the buzzing sound. The engine sounds like it wants to start, but doesn't. Since we're on the subject, what are the pros and cons in buying a bigger size pump? Would installing a bigger pump than you need actually hurt your performance?

Nope, just because it says 190LPH, it doesn't pump that all the time. It only pulls what it needs.

I was looking through different fuel pumps and something about a T-rex came up. What is this, and do I need one when upgrading my fuel pump? Sorry for all the questions, I just don't want to have to drop my fuel tank more than once.

You can't have too big a fuel pump, I'm using a 255lph in a car that I haven't wrestled into the 13s yet. Combination bad driver and all-season tires.

It's a return fuel system so whatever the injectors don't use goes into the return line back to the tank. This keeps the pump from straining.
