Default Problems with ethanol in fuel?

The other day I was on my way back to my shop in town after a quick errand and my car shutdown on me like it was out of fuel. A cop helped me get it back to the shop and was telling me about ethanol being in the fuel nowdays(10-15%) and the problems it has about drawing miosture out of the air and getting water in the fuel tank. If anyone else has experienced this same problem i was wondering what you would recommend to solve this problem. Thanks!

A lot of places only have the 10% ethonal gasoline. I have posted this about a million times about how the ethonal stuff is horrible for most cars. A lot of newer cars can handle it just fine but older cars weren't meant to run it.

It has a horrible "shelf life" at about 60 days. And has a horrible tendency to hold in moisture from the air.

I work around small engines all day, every day. I've seen what this ethocrap does to carburetors and rubber fuel line. I've seen it eat away at the diaphrams in 2 cycle carburetors. And it will clog up fuel filters in an extreme hurry.

It's just plain bad stuff and I don't understand why a lot of citys/states only have the 10% ethonal.

Briggs & Stratton makes ethonal test kits, where you can test the percentage of ethonal in the gas. Even though most places say "may contain UP TO 10% ethonal" I've seen anywhere up to 20% ethonal!

If you can find a gas station that serves ONLY 100% gasoline, that is the only thing you should put in your gas tank.

If your car isn't made to run the ethocrap gas, it will rob horse power and ruin your gas mileage...

Thank God, that here in Norman 99% of the gas stations are 100% gasoline now!

Sea Foam helps to remove the moisture.

Yes, ethanol is one of the worst mistakes our government has imposed on us since proabition. We pay more for our food, get less mileage, and have to pay for repairs to our gas lines, gas tanks and carbs. that are a result of ethanol usage. And if you think it's bad now-our government is quitely moving to increase the ethonal level to 15% min. and 20% max. This is a result of the ethonal lobby pushing for more usage because they are losing the shirts and closing plants at the current level of consumption.
After you have changed out everything in your fuel system, about the only thing you can do is don't try to keep this crap in your tank or in storage any longer than you have to. You also need to start your engine frequently when storing for the winter. Stabilizer helps and try to close off all sources of air getting into the system. Ethanol sucks moisture out of the air resulting in rust.

Hi,

Funny, first time in a long time I haven't seen it called 'crapinol".
The stuff sucks. Period. I have a commercial mower, as well as gas powered blowers, weed eaters and hedge trimmers. Everything is suffering thanks to this crap. I now run my motors on either 100LL aviation fuel or Sunoco racing fuel. I just don't have time for the constant carburetor and fuel system problems. Automotive unleaded gas was bad enough but then they added that damned ethanol, and it really hit the fan. Water retention is a nit compared to how it gums up everything from carburetor components to fuel injectors in fuel injected cars. I'm probably going to drop my catalytic convertors and run Sunoco Blue or Aviation gas in my 90 Mustang. I don't drive it all that much and really don't want ethanol laced gas sitting in it's tank. The gas laced with it makes the exhaust smell odd. I'm wondering when one of my cars will turn on it's check engine light due to the way this stuff burns. It's funny. Isopropyl alcohol will actually clean up the gum, this stuff creates it.
I have looked but can't find a single station in north Florida that sells 100% gasoline. You can smell the ethanol when you are pumping the stuff. Used to be if you bought the super, you could get 100% gas. Not anymore in this area. If anyone knows of a station that sells 100% gas without ethanol in the Lake City and Gainesville areas, please let me know.

We're lucky enough to still have two 100% gas stations in the area (that I know of).

This is anecdotal evidence, but I usually get 22mpg with mixed driving. I recently took a two hour each way highway trip, and ended up getting 24mpg on the tank.

Coming back from an autocross a few weeks ago, I had to fill up on the 10-15% ethanol crap because of where I was. After filling my tank this weekend, I got 20.8mpg on the the with-ethanol tank, even with a 1.5 hour each way trip with few stops and starts.

The 100% gas is a little more expensive (even accounting for the increased mileage) but I try to use it whenever I can.

There's 2 straight marine grade 93 Octane stations in my county in Florida, it's the only stuff I use, it's 20 cents more than ethanol blend 93 BUT I get 3 more miles per gallon with the NON Corn Fed Crap so it evens out, PLUS the car runs and idles much better
Yeah so much for emissions, you need to burn more of the blend fuel to drive the same distance??? Idiotic!!
