Reading Computer Codes

is there a trick where i can read my trouble codes without a scanner. i know on a thirdgen firebird you can put a paper clip in the socket using it like a jumper turn the key on and the engine light blinks the code. i was wondering if i could do this with a ford computer. i have a 1990 lx w/ 2.3
