Thumbs down New clutch, had to go back 5 days later, another clutch 5 miles later

I work for pep boys, i know i know, but anyway, i just got a 2.3l 87 mustang with manual trans, the clutch was going so i decided to get it replaced, a days later it smokes, the mechanic tells me its excess grease burning off, well 3 days later it completely stopped moving, so i took it back, they took out the clutch disc, and the lining was completely down to bare metal on the pressure plate side. Well they installed a new clutch, and when i got the car i now noticed a knocking, i asked and he said it was nothing. Well i drove it about 5 miles, and a shard of metal had shot through the oil pan, one mechanic said it was a rod the other said it was a bearing, the oil pan hasn't been taken off yet, but i was just wondering is this their F***-up, thanks.

Sounds like there was a lot of miles on the car. Without knowing all the specifics, probably not their fault.

Well there were only 85,000 on it, and it was running really nice until i got the 2nd clutch put in. I think they definitely messed something up, otherwise, its a bigggg coincidence, that it would happen as soon as they touched it a second time.

That is low miles for a 16 year old car. How were the oil change records?

In your defense....... Did they screw up the flywheel install? If so. Did the crankshaft break? Seems farfetched, but an unbalanced crankshaft could ventilate the block.

Goodluck,

Mike

Ok, update, they still didn't pull the pan, but i've been doing some research, and on the older model fords, you are supposed to hoist the engine from the top rather than jack it, because the oil pump is so close to the bottom of the pan, that if its distorted, will cause oil starvation, which in turn would cause it to blow a rod bearing. The mechanics at pep boys aren't too bright.

That would do it. Looks like new engine.
